Thelonius Monk, Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, Dave Brubeck and Keith Jarrett are just a few of the legendary jazz pianists with whom ALEX NAVARRO has never shared a stage! Not yet, anyway!
However, no stranger when it comes to playing along side living legends, Alex continues to strive toward the musical mastery only an unwavering dedication and perseverance to an art can bring forth.
Evidence of this can be found coming off the heels as arranger and keyboardist for the 2005, Grammy Nominated CARLY SIMON project MOONLIGHT SERENADE, Alex continued to mesmerize audiences, the world over, during Carly’s international tour of that same year.
Alex spent the next year in the development of his own musical endeavors, which features some of the finest studio musicians in Los Angeles. Alex went on to promote his music in Latin America and Japan, performing at jazz venues and festivals.
As 2006 was approaching, the esteemed and highly distinguished singer-songwriter, ART GARFUNKEL, approached Alex to lend his musical artistry to the album SOME ENCHANTED EVENING, a compilation and salute to some of the finest music ever written.
Recognized primarily as a technically proficient pianist, it was his improvisational artistry however, that captured the attention of none other than the world-renowned and legendary vocalist ENGELBERT HUMPERDINK who swept Alex up to arrange and perform on his 2007 album, WINDING ROAD. Following the completion of that project, Alex was fortunate to have accompanied Engelbert for the great majority of the U.S. tour that supported the project.
Alex’s sole regret during the ENGLEBERT tour was that no woman threw her panties at him. One woman, who caught Alex’s eye however, did send her teeth backstage, as a small token of her appreciation!
Presently, Alex is touring with Grammy Award winner, QUEEN LATIFAH in support of her latest jazz-vocal project, TRAV’LIN’ LIGHT, released this past September on Verve. Featuring performances, primarily in more intimate venues across the country, Alex, along with the tour, did however, take some time off in September for a string of performances on the REGIS & KELLY SHOW, the TODAY SHOW and then finally, on the TONIGHT SHOW, starring JAY LENO. The tour continued through the fall with a memorable finale performance on the AMERICAN MUSIC AWARDS.
Between dates this spring and summer with Queen Latifah, Alex has been hard at work arranging and performing on the latest ROD STEWART project being produced by the legendary RICHARD PERRY and slated for release in late 2008.
And just this past year, as a result of his recent procession of high profile recording projects, international touring and television performances, Alex has been asked by M-AUDIO, a leading provider of digital audio and MIDI solutions, to join their cadre of international performers, promoting their equipment worldwide. (It’s about time, his poor little Casio his mom bought him for Christmas 20 years ago was just not cuttin’ it).
Alex, 31, was born in Peru, although we can’t seem to locate anyone in Peru to acknowledge that fact. Nonetheless, his family moved to Texas when he was still very young and was raised in Houston.
Alex graduated with a Bachelor of Music degree in Jazz Studies, whatever that is, from the University of North Texas, where he was an ensemble companion of contemporary Jazz-Pop vocalist and Grammy Award winner, NORAH JONES. Sadly, when reached for a comment on her time spent performing with Alex, we couldn’t get Norah to stop laughing!
And then her people asked us politely to leave.
