About Me

BABYOIL is a 4 piece indie-rock, post(pop)punk band from Luxembourg. Their sound is often assimilated to Bands like Sonic Youth, Blonde Redhead, Lack, The Lapse or Deus. Babyoil is Sébastien Peiffer on electric guitars and lead vocals, Paulo 'Jim' Fernandes on electric guitars and backing vocals, Dino D'Elicio on bass and Claude Rafael on Drums and backing vocals too.
Babyoil was founded in 1994 and experienced some line-up changes before and after a longer hiatus of 3 years.
Jim and Sebastien were founders of the band and are the only ones remaining from the first line-up.
The band has played shows with bands like Deus, Gashuffer, Sick of it All, Ftagen and Skin, just to name a few and is part of the new “Luxembourgish Music Wave” that gather bands like Versus You, Tvesla, HNV, Metro, Mutiny on The Bounty, DADOES, MiaowMiaow or Eternal Tango.

'This is the sinking' Versus You / Eternal Tango / Babyoil
Live Review

I remember a time when everyone would have screamed “sell out” if a punk band had decided to play a show at the Atelier. And when people would have formed a mob to lynch local indie bands who made it to the top of commercial radio charts. But that was a time when punk was misunderstood as being something which refuses to get heard by the masses. In fact punk is something that refuses compromises, and works its way all by itself, and in that way, Versus You are still a punk band that does their own thing, work hard for it and therefore deservedly earn their success. Tonight it was Babyoil who opened at 9pm in front of an audience that was still growing, so it was a little sad to see these guys play a really convincing show in front of mostly adolescents who were waiting for the better known bands. Maybe Babyoil shouldn’t have tried to involve the audience, because they were not warm yet, but their set which started with their already classics Demon and Freakshow and ended with the equally amazing Over The Clouds was faultless. Their Versus You cover version which they presented already at their own CD release party at the Kulturfabrik two weeks ago was also a welcome diversion. The audience was really young, most of them probably even not old enough to have a driver’s license, which made it therefore easy to find a parking spot for your car. And initially I felt to be among the oldest people at the Atelier. The only older ones must have been parents, and some of them brought aspiring punk rockers that could not have been older than twelve years. And they were waiting for Eternal Tango, who at the time of the show were at the second position of the Eldoradio charts. It was not their own headlining spot today, which must have been why the fashion boys from Dudetown tried a lot of new songs that had the audience going along well, although their classics had the audience singing along. This is something I have rarely, if ever, seen at a local show. Eternal Tango also honoured Versus You by playing a cover version of “Crush”, the hit single of their first album “Marathon”. When Versus You started their set after 10pm, there were already more than 600 people at the Atelier, which is probably a record for a locals-only show (if we don’t count free events). Versus You may sound a little tame at times on their new album “This Is The Sinking”, but live, they are a beast. Fat guitar walls accompany singer/songwriter Eric Rosenfeld through his repertoire, contrasting his sometimes fragile seeming personality against the powerful instrumentation, and with songs that have really charisma, they had the huge audience on their side. Their Eldoradio chart topper “Hotel Room” had the Atelier boiling, showing once and for all that Luxembourg is ready to have not only great bands, but also great bands that are willing to invest themselves to make it really big. Target audience were of course teenagers, but what remained was an evening full of entertaining and varied music of the highest quality. Can’t wait to see Versus You teaming up with Babyoil rocking the d:qliq in March. That will be a riot!

Review on our CD Release Night @ Kulturfabrik

How long can a band be away and still be considered relevant? Babyoil’s first CD saw the light of day already ten years ago, and a decade is a long, long time to be remembered by your original fans. The last few years, the band was sporadically active, had some major line-up changes and was back today finally with their second album “Score”. To celebrate this, they invited to a release party at the Kulturfabrik. Shortly after nine, scene veterans La Fa Connected started the evening with their DC influenced postcore sound. The sound was optimal, the performance routined, just the right mix to get the growing crowd started. To achieve greatness, they need more catchy moments, but they have not been playing together for that long, so much can still be expected. Tvesla were the second band of the night, and it was one of the rare occasions to see them perform under professional circumstances. Normally they prefer the small and smelly pub shows, to be closer to the audience, but they proved today that they are just as good and even better when they have a soundman getting the best out of them. Their angular instrumental noise rock is hammering its way into your head, it’s not pretty, but that’s not their intention anyway. Intense performance with two new songs, but don’t ask me to tell you which ones, because it’s rather hard to discern instrumental experimental tracks. First highlight of the evening were Mutiny On The Bounty. The still don’t have vocals, but there performance was so out of this world that people stood mesmerised by the sheer complexity of their arrangements, and it’s a miracle how they always end up finding memorable parts that make you recognise their songs. MOTB have been intensely touring lately, getting good reviews from all over Europe, so Luxembourg has to watch out as this is one of the really hot bands of the moment. Babyoil ended the evening with their testosterone fuelled alternative rock. Starting with a long instrumental, to get the audience of at least 200 people started, they continued playing the songs of their new album. If they sounded always a little ethereal and dreamlike in the past, this has changed considerably on the new album. Like a Sonic Youth without the intellectual pretence, Babyoil are real alt rockers that don’t care about current trends and hypes, and the people liked it. They ended their set with a Versus You cover version, and had their singer Eric on vocals for that one, which should be the opportunity to remind you that Babyoil will also be playing at Versus You CD release party at the Atelier in two weeks. It’s great to see that local bands lately turn to real venues to celebrate the releases of their albums. It’s just better to have good sound, enough room and effective bar service. If only the security guys would lighten up and not act like authoritarian prison guards. No one ever came to harm by taking his plastic beer cup outside!

Here a lovely concert review from an old friend:

After weeks of hardly any shows, this one started the concert season, even if its setting made it rather a warm-up show for the bigger ones that are yet to come. The Rockhalcafé has adequate sound proofing because it was planned from the beginning as a little venue, but its shape makes it hard to get the fans going for a rock show. That’s what Babyoil noticed at the beginning of their set when they asked the people to come closer to the stage, as most preferred to take a sitting position on a table or at the bar. At least they treated us with a powerful sound. It’s been years since I last saw this band that started already a long time ago, and possibly it was the first time I saw them without their twin singers. Back in the Nineties, Babyoil were a rather avant-garde sounding alt rock band, but this has changed now. Their guitarist has taken over the vocals, and is joined by a second guitarist, to deliver Nineties sounding power chords that reminded of a harder Placebo or Muse. Entertaining for the first three songs, but then I was missing a bit the variety.

And a review of the sonic 'Youz' Night @ Youz Club

It was quite a disappointment when the Elevator Bar closed down, especially since it was renamed after a program from a local cell phone company aimed at young people. Bad taste in my opinion, furthermore the name is keeping mid-Thirty people like me away from that place. Tonight I decided to have a look anyway, because it was the first time they had a rock show going on with me not having to get up early the following morning. The concept was original, so much needs to be admitted. Three local noise artists would make for a diverse evening. But first of all it took me some time to find the toilet which had been relocated to the first floor, making it a steep and dangerous climb in the later hours of the evening. Also the stage has now a more central position, which is also a step back from the more classical orientation of the late Elevator bar. But let’s get to the music. Torpid were announced but didn’t play. Instead we got a solo performance by Yikez!, which is the laptop project of their singer Gilli. On his Myspace page, it still sounds interesting, but to be honest, what he did tonight was rather unlistenable. The music wasn’t that bad actually: strange, haunting indietronica with interesting beat patterns, but the vocals seemed unconnected to the music, making his full playback show sound like a misguided attempt at karaoke. Instrumental post noise veterans Tvesla had one of their better nights, interrupted only by technical problems with the bass guitar. Their long tracks always have a certain hypnotic potential, but in the end, there is nothing new to be said about them. At times it feels as if they are treading water, rehashing the same program since their early days. Maybe it’s time for them to finally release a full-length CD of their material and then start writing new stuff. Babyoil had an easy game. The Elevator and now probably the Youz Club are something like their homebase, and their more melodic alternative rock seemed to reach a wider audience. While it is nothing special what they are doing, they are still doing it with conviction and experience. Sebb has been playing in bands for nearly twenty years now (he doesn’t look as old as he actually is!), and he is quite a routined frontman who delivered tonight a more convincing show than a few months ago at the Rockhal Café. Also their set contains already a few sure hits. I am looking forward to their CD release party at the Kulturfabrik in early February to listen to them under more professional circumstances. The Sonic ‘Youz’ Night didn’t bring us any revelations, but it was a pleasant evening anyway, with the music becoming better from artist to artist. It is good to see that there are still places and artists willing to play shows during the school holidays instead of fleeing to the Alps to do some skiing. Too bad next week nothing seems to be going on. But then we’ll probably need a week off to resuscitate our energies.
