Tyson's innovative bass style and technique are derived from the masters of double bass such as: Niels-Henning Orsted Pedersen, Edgar Meyer, Christian McBride, and Rufus Reid. His improvisational creativity invokes a high level of facility while approaching bassline construction with harmonic intertwine and a rich acoustic sound . Tyson has participated in live radio broadcasts and various studio recordings performing with artists such as; Frank Mantooth, Ira Sullivan, Irvin Mayfield, Brad Goode, John Gunther, Andrew D'Angelo, Matt Wilson, Paul Romaine and Pat Bianchi. He has professionally performed with various symphony orchestras for headlining classical productions.
As an active musician, Tyson is currently performing and recording around the Denver area with his co-led group, Blue Avenue. He supports his performing experience and creativity with a Masters degree in jazz performance and pedagogy from the University of Colorado. As an instructor of music for eleven years he has taught curriculum including bass and ensemble techniques, jazz improvisation, music history, music theory, ear training and arranging. Tyson is a private instructor of bass guitar at Music and Arts and a double bass instructor through privately owned, Duo Music Studio. In addition, he has guest lectured in jazz techniques at the University of Colorado, guest conducted ensembles, and directed clinics and master classes at local area schools. He is currently a professor of music at Arapaho Community College, Front Range Community College and the Director of the South Jefferson County Youth Jazz Ensemble.
