I'm not very good at writing about myself, which is odd since most of my songs are at least semi-autobiographical, but this format is just insurmountable to me. I like folk music, pop music, and acoustic music and I play all three. I don't go into any form of writing with any pretensions on how it should be. I just write songs that sound good to my ears. I hope they will sound good to yours as well.
I have a cd out. You should buy it. All you have to do is click on the album cover below and it'll take you straight to Paypal. Then all I have to do is put it in the mail for you. Easy as that! So I don't see any reason why you shouldn't go ahead and give it a go....Are you still reading this?
The following are two of the nicest things anyone has ever said about me and my music and I'm endlessly flattered by them.
Alex Enggist can turn his heartache into music. The twenty-year-old songwriter is more a storyteller than anything else, stringing together memory and melody to create music that is both refreshingly personal and universal. He has so many stories to tell and I find it impossible not to listen, to wait eagerly for each line to lead me further into the story and the thick of his thoughts. He is remarkable because he has found and grabbed the part of music that is easily the best (but these days so often forgotten) – the honesty. He connects to his audience because he writes what it is to be human, songs about the sorrow that you know and the things that make it worthwhile. He wants his audience to remember that life is mean sometimes, cold sometimes, swing-you-around-by-the-heartstrings sometimes, but the beautiful part about love-gone-wrong is the possibility of learning to make love go right.
For those reasons, Alex’s music is the kind of stuff we go to when we need it…not just when we want music but when we really need music. There is comfort in listening to him sing, in swaying along to his smoky-smooth rhythms, simple guitar melodies, and lyrics that easily could have been your own (had you, of course, his ability for songwriting). And his raw, warm voice flies and falls and shakes with the emotion of his stories, as though each time he sings a song is the first time he has said those words aloud. The daring confidence in that voice makes it obvious to see that his music comes from himself, not from anyone else. He writes from who he’s been to figure out who he’s going to be, and he has no doubts that music will get him there.
Listen to him once, and you won’t have doubts about that either.
Thanks Mary!
"Alex has always had a very unique, "no BS" style of songwriting that I've always admired and respected and with this new EP, even just the song titles alone represent the fortitude of Alex's musical legacy. He is by no means a pop artist- so I don't want you to go in expecting to be hit in the face and gain that instant pleasure that dies out after the sparks quit flying in your ears. Alex Enggist works the other way around- he seeps in, he rests within you, and someday, when you could be doing something as simple as fixing a drainage leak, his words and his melodies will come pouring out and through your hands, guiding that wrench with perfect passion, as you mend pipeline wounds, wiping away the puddle of tears. We strongly recommend that you visit his page and give those songs a listen." ~the eloquent and loving words of my friends in We Know, Plato!~
