"MAKIN FACES - well . . . what can one say? We were worried that these guys wouldn't slot comfortably into the rhythm bonanza that is IDLE MINDS, but quite frankly they slew us. You guys can quite comfortably command respect. Beautiful! So tight! (your music that is). I caught our resident Turntablissed Jomo on the floor with his head cradled in his shaky hands on the verge of tears. I shouted over -"Yo, mate . . .you alright?" He lifted his head slowly and his sweet little, brown eyes met mine and after a deep, deep sigh -"These guys are fuckin awesome!"

"First off the blocks are Making Faces, and it's a long, slow slide into their set; some echoes of delay and a rumble of bass. Eventually the sounds coalesce into melodies; long, fluid peals of prog-influenced guitar that rise and fall and sweep across hypnotic, rolling rhythms. It's a very Mancunian flavour of prog-post-rock; immediate reference points are Oceansize and Day For Airstrikes although often the guitar work is reminiscent of (The) Verve's Nick McCabe, back in the days before Richard Ashcroft's ego hemmed in his stunning solos to under the five minute mark. Making Faces have no such restrictions; the vocal-less tracks sound like they might have been born in the swirls of stoned jam sessions then nurtured into loose shapes, building in power and depth as they progress. Just four tracks tonight, but each one a lovely kaleidoscopic trance. Outside in smokers' corner someone notes that there's not a massive degree of variation at work there, which could pose problems were they to find themselves needing to fill longer sets, but this criticism can be answered and indeed countered with just four words: Explosions in The Sky."
