About Me

Hi there! I'm Troy. I have recently relocated to Portland, OR from Pullman, WA where I played with the bluegrass/jam band Chubbs Toga, the Washington State University Symphony orchestra, and the WSU Big Band. I used to live in Chicago and played quite a bit there, most notably with the jam rock band The Junction. I've got experience with pit orchestras, accompanying singers, playing with original and cover rock bands, and singing leads and harmonies (baritone). In February I won the bass solo competition at the 2008 Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival in Moscow, ID for the second year in a row. If you're looking for a bass player, drop me a line. Will travel. Thanks!..

My Interests

Music:

Influences: John Coltrane (with PC and Jimmy Garrison), Bill Evans with Scott Lefaro, Ron Carter, listening to various Brad Mehldau trio recordings (with Larry Grenadier), enjoying some different singer/songwriters including Gillian Welch, Ryan Adams, and Tom Waits, and soaking up recordings with Charlie Haden as a sideman (old Ornette Coleman and 70's Keith Jarrett especially) - just to mention a few. I like Edgar Meyer quite a bit. Electric players I've really been into: James Jamerson, Donald Duck Dunn, Bootsy Collins, Rocco Prestia, Steve Lennox (Rockford, IL), and Jimmy Smith (DAMN!). Singers include Louis Armstrong, Chet Baker, Tom Waits, Bob Dylan. Some favorite classical composers include Debussy, Tchaikovsky, Bartok, Sibelius, and Copeland. The two main teachers I have studied with previously are Larry Gray (Chicago) and David Snider (Pullman, WA). I'm currently studying with David Friesen in Portland.
