About Me

Drawing her influence from many genres within popular song, Rachel Bade-McMurphy is a jazz singer whose performances are technically masterful, artistically engaging and personally inviting. Striving for the deeper things of jazz, her traditional and contemporary jazz performances include original compositions, traditional swing, Latin jazz, hard-bop, modal and free-bop selections.A former student of Washington State University, Rachel was twice named "outstanding College Vocal Soprano" at Moscow Idaho’s Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival; was chosen to participate in the IAJE 'Sisters in Jazz' mentoring program; and has written and recorded background music for Emmy-nominated Promotional spots for KHQ-Q6 of Spokane.Also a clarinet & saxophone player, Rachel is currently residing in Pullman WA. Here she teaches private music lessons, works a day job at AIA Insurance and travels throughout the Pacific Northwest to perform. Her husband (trumpet player & drummer) Brendan McMurphy will be working towards a graduate degree in music at WSU.

Influences: The Bold & The Beautiful, the Lasting & the Deep...... I like my music the way I like my coffee & my chocolate....that is strong, rich, and only sweet enough. Wayne Shorter, Woody Shaw, Horace Silver, Andrew Hill, Joe Henderson, John Coltrane, Duke Ellington, Miles Davis, Jimmy Scott, Andy Bey, Grachan Moncur III, Billie Holiday, Carmen McRae.... Etc Etc Etc............ Nice Melodies, interesting lyrics .... Classical music, Classic Rock, R&B, Soul, Blues, Funk and the jazz fusions of them. Even a certain amount of classic country and limited amount of grunge/hard rock.
Sounds Like: Jazz Music. Well versed in the tradition of acoustic jazz music, highly instrumentally influenced (specifically by saxophonists).
