About Me

Your OFFICIAL PHX myspace listing. (c) 2004 Phoenix Urban.
+ BRIEF HIST:
Though originally discovered around 700 A.D. by the Ho Ho Kam Indian tribe, the area which is known today as 'Phoenix' wasn't officially settled until the mid 1800's. It was eventually incorporated into a fully recognized municipality on May 4th of 1868, and, then became the official capitol of the Arizona Territory in 1901.
+ THE GIST:
Phoenix has just recently become the 5th largest city in United States per the U.S. Census Bureau, currently only behind New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago, and Houston in population. The city of Phoenix is larger than Dallas, Seattle, San Francisco, San Diego, Denver, Detroit, Atlanta, Boston, Cleveland, and now Philadelphia, just to name a few more widely known municipalities. Without a doubt, Phoenix is the political, social, financial, transportation and entertainment capitol (or mecca, rather) of the southwestern United States. Within it's city's own boundaries it carries close to 1.5 million residents, and within the boundaries of it's MSA (Metropolitan Statistical Area), nearly 4.1 million residents now reside. Over the last 25-30 years, it's metropolitan area, which also consists of the neighboring suburbs Scottsdale, Tempe, Mesa, Chandler, and Glendale, etc., has been consistently ranked as one of the fastest growing MSAs in the country, outpacing such behemoths as Houston, Atlanta, Dallas, and Los Angeles, in terms of actual percentage growth; usually only being moderately surpassed by the Las Vegas MSA.
+ THE HIP FACTOR:
Old stereotypes aside, Phoenix is now officially hip. It currently boasts a new and growing local music scene substantial enough to rival even Austin's or Atlanta's; 2 separate, annual international film festivals of growing stature; and, it's monthly First Friday Artwalks, downtown, is now one of the largest attended such events in the country. It's neighboring society sister, Scottsdale, not only has more professional art galleries and studios located within it's city's limits than any other city in the U.S., trailing behind only New York City and Santa Fe, but, it also contains more nightclubs and bars in it's downtown area per square mile than any other location outside of Miami Beach. All of this, with the included vibrancy of college-town Tempe (home of monstrous ASU) and it's bars and nightlife too, it's difficult to deny the power, prominence, and influence the Phoenix area carries on daily basis.
Welcome to the PHX.
