I work with MICHAEL DERZON and IAN TURNER out of Bainbridge Island, Washington. MICHAEL is a multi talented musician playing mandolin, guitar, harmonica, trumpet, flute. IAN is another multi talented player on mandolin, gutiar and percussion. I love playing music with these cats.
I also collaborate with TOM WILSON, out of Belfair, Washington in a duo context called INCOGNITO. 2005 we released, Live at Destinos and currently we are in the studio recording, SONGS FROM THE HEARTLAND-THAT'S HEARTLAND NOT HOMELAND, DUMMY, to be released in 2008.
When in the UK I work with GERRY COOPER, a fine guitarist. Gerry is out of Shipley, West Yorkshire and can be located at at his myspace or at his own web page. Cooper has several release to his credit, works continuously, and we will be recording a project in the UK late 2008 for a 2009 release and tour in the States.
Another fine player out of Otley, West Yorkshire that I have begun collaboration with is GERRY MCNEICE. Gerry has several projects released and can be reached through his web page or at his myspace
Truth of it is I am always looking for collaborations as music demands dialogue and inspiration from others points of views.
Influences: My mother fed me Broadway show tunes and the pop songs of the fifties. Marty Robbins was my first musical discovery, Johnny Horton was another find. My father also influenced me as he was a singer that worked in radio prior to WWII, when he inlisted to serve his country.
Then Elvis....I knew something was up with those early Sun recordings, but was too young to really get him, but realized how the US was rocked and shocked by him. After Elvis died in 1960, with the avent of being a movie star, Dion, Roy Orbinson, The Everly Brothers and Ricky Nelson caught my attention.
Much was on the radio, but it was not the real meal deal, it was white cats, Pat Boone covering Little Richard, or The Beach Boys stealing licks from Chuck Berry-just didn't feel right. Then came the UK invasion, The Beatles, Stones, Kinks, and from the US, a few cut through....Rock and Roll. The British invasion allowed me to find black-American musical roots, and in the Marines I found black America and Soul Music.
Upon release from the armed services I became absorbed with Dylan but, what really began to happen for me in the 70's was the love of jazz. I also discovered a cat out of Scotland, John Martyn. Martyn is probably my biggest influence as he is such an original. That said, Joni Mitchell is also a huge part of my love of music, her music and approach to collaboration was another very strong influence.
I didn't start playing guitar until age 23 but took to it quick and as I progressed as a player and performer my contemporaries were the hugest influences; David Hall, The Skyboys, Dudley Hill, Ron Davies, Janis Skok, Neal Woodall, Jim Page, Michael Tomlinson, Jeff Tassin, Dan Mohler, my brother Kevin Anderson and many more Seattle players.
Today I am expanding my musical language and horizons in America and the United Kingdom and to be really honest the people that influnce me the most are the ones that can get up on a stage and bang out a tune.
