About Me

Rest In Peace
I have a couple things in common with Robert Plant - aside from rugged good looks. I performed in duet with Alison Krauss - when she was 15, I think? - at the Newport Folk Festival. There's a funny story about that.
I'm not from around here. I probably don't know as many cool local people as you do. Sorry. I sometimes talk a little differently than people from the area.
Okay: This is all about me now, like it says, and no other single person.
I'm an average American, kind, sincere guy; not especially talented or wealthy; newly healthy, honest, law-abiding, respectful of boundaries, and quiet when I've nothing of value to say. I know how to make a point and then shut up, and I carry a decent conversation, funny or serious as appropriate - and clear. It wasn't always so.
I see that I'm the kind of guy that people feel comfortable with, and trusting toward - with one or two sad exceptions. Because by being honest and trustworthy - and avoiding doing things for people solely to win their favor - I've regained some confidence and self-respect that I'd destroyed during frantic times. You did not need my urgency.
I don't ever want to be one of those people who tries to run anyone else's life, or to "fix" them, or be a surrogate parent. Partly because I've seen how that will reinforce my friends' delusions that it's okay for them to kill themselves one way or other, or to totally fuck themselves up and over; and partly because it'll wreck me. But I can't stop any other person from doing that to them, and I can't stand around to watch it happen. I'm not one who collects "misfit" people (often my favorite kind), to keep them dependent and fearful. I'm generous and have plenty to offer anyone, but I won't buy people with expensive gifts or jobs or advice even when they think they need those things. I only want to be around to help when they ask for help, with something I know about. And get them up onto their own two feet.
I need open-hearted, trustworthy people nearby me every day. But I don't need any person to take care of me.
There are Hard Truths that most people probably know instinctively, which I've had to be taught to understand. Like I had to learn through trial and error that it helps nobody to buy into a friend's or loved one's irrational fears - no matter what kind, no matter who or what may be feeding those fears, for whatever reasons. Okay, you might not know what I mean if you haven't been there.
That's okay.
But I'll say, too, that struggling to overcome irrational fear is still struggling. And struggle is itself the fuel for a vicious cycle of pain. It's especially true for me when someone I care deeply about is going through something like this, and just can't give it up. It happens. IT'S NOT ANYBODY'S FAULT. And nobody has to keep hurting themselves, once they make a decision to understand and learn more about that. If you've followed me this far, you're capable of finding a real solution for yourself, that lasts. It's simple - but hard, because it requires honest self-appraisal. And it takes time, and by nature I'm impatient.
For me it was appalling. It's been worth it, and my outlook on life - if not life, itself - continues to improve.
Even when life sucks.
Which it has for me, lately.
I once was upset that I couldn't keep people (people like me) out of the way of what I consider harm; away from the people, places, and things which will absolutely destroy what I think their lives could be. I'm so over that now. And that is absolutely huge.
I'm a man with a purpose now. I'm not a man with a mission.
The Gates of Heaven haven't been opened for me. The Gates of Hell have been, and I'm on my way out.
Creativity, productivity, health, restful sleep, and - to some extent - sanity, all began when the running stopped. I'd been chasing my tail. Like the ladies all keep doing, but not as effectively.
I'm cautious with Love, and avoid using the word. But I've learned what it is - or mostly what it's not. First, it is not the things I say or do to get laid. It isn't the deep caring that makes me want to be with someone, or to improve their lives, or to save the world. It's not something I give to other people, or which they give to me. It's what enters into me without offer, when I act with truth and compassion. And for the people and animals and songs that I love, it has to be absolutely unconditional, always and totally. I don't look or ask for it. There's never a "I'd love that artist, or that gorgeous blonde, or these woods more, if only..." And so it is with anyone I call a friend - even when sometimes they're compelled to treat me contemptibly.
Because I honestly own up to any part I've played in that, and accept prior bad acts which I've committed - at least for myself even when others yet cannot forgive. For the rest of it (the hostility a few have shown me) they really might be unable to help themselves from acting with rage and fear and resentment. I don't have to take shit from anyone today. But backing off and allowing someone whom I love to feel their own feelings - to suffer if that's what it takes - without any aid or comfort from me, that's one of the things that real friends are for, sometimes. Even when my physical presence is unwanted and resented. I can only hope it's not forever, no matter how likely it may sometimes seem. Truth and my loyalty to those I love are unshakable under any conditions.
I adore music and movies. But mostly music.
It's been a long time since I've gotten into a fight.
It's quite recent that I've found I don't care what other people think or do, as long as they don't hurt anyone I care at all about - including themselves. Yeah: I care a lot.
I like to thank people to whom I am grateful, and to tell them why, as clearly and simply as I can manage. I don't like to do anything that requires apology.
I try hard not to bullshit anyone, including myself. With that goal in mind I don't have to try so hard.
I'll never have so much again, as I've lost or destroyed up until now. I like to think I've started trying, anyway anyhow. Guitarslinger

Original pin-up design inspired by Alberto Vargas, Johnny Cash, and girls with guitars, everywhere
by Vinny Burkhart I'm on Facebook - which, although I've always thought it kinda blows, has recently turned out to be a great way for me to share videos, events and articles. Click and see.
I'm on YouTube
I'm on Pandora
Truth, Love, Beauty, God, Music. All hard for me to understand or talk about, but a lot easier to know and feel since I've come to understand that, for me, they're all basically the same thing.
I've discovered that I have a huge number of big, heavy crates of vinyl records that I don't love very much, after my recent move. Wish I'd recognised that sooner.

My Interests

I'm interested in drinking.

Most times right now - since that really hasn't worked out - I'm more interested in finding productive ways to have fun. And better, more sustainable ways to live. And helping others to survive, in order to achieve some of that, too. Some life-events prodded me to reassess and renew some interests from childhood.

Playing instruments (I'm trying to self-teach, or soon will). I used to build cameras and dirt-bikes - and photography and actual street-legal motorcycles are becoming new/old passions.

KUSTOM KULTURE

Life, after life.

The origins of interesting things - good things as well as interesting crap.

Coffee

Oddities (I'm going to change this link every day or two I think.)

The Sixty Second Rule

Outsiders

Folk Art
I was interested in Normal.
But that's only a setting on the washing-machine. I'm very keen on nutrition
although I'll probably always be interested in french fries and donuts.
Oh, and I put together a list of other things.

I'd like to meet:

I've already met Al Kaprielian and James Brown .

Honest people

Horses, dogs, toddlers, and other beings with plenty to show and little to prove

Guys and broads who are always ready to burst into laughter - or those who might not be ready, but do so anyhow. Sometimes. Not like all the time. Because that's just insane.

Passersby who burst spontaneously - for no apparent reason - but instead of creating a big mess, with organs and fluids and human tissue flying everywhere (because I'm squeamish, and I have a fear of messes because I always get blamed for them, and then I have to clean them up or else get ridden out of town on a rail) there's like a funny little cartoon noise when they pop open, and then the person becomes once more whole (another cute sound, like a balloon-animal being twisted), shakes and shrugs it off, and goes about their business.

Cooks and waitstaff

Masseuses

People who think more about what they're doing, than about what they're feeling

Anybody who cares more about how others feel, than about what others think

People whose actions are consistent with both their words and convictions

Those who need less to talk about their political and religious philosophy, than to put it into their art

People with more knowledge than beliefs

People who don't consider their experience to be "baggage" but something from which to learn more, and to share for others' benefit

People whose hygiene is better than their cosmetology

Parents who can stop, sit, and watch their kids be kids (not "manage" them)

Quiet, wealthy people who like to give all their money away

Loud, wealthy people who like to give all their money away

Women who I can lift up and safely toss around a little, and who enjoy that sort of thing

Lovers of film (with their own darkrooms)

Anybody who can sit and listen to music with a friend in order to listen better (with an extra pair of ears)

Folks with restoration projects

Anyone patient and generous enough with their time to teach me how to do any of the following:

build a piece of furniture - or anything lasting and useful play any instrument acceptably well do things by ancient tradition and fundamentals rather than by using one's own new-age improvisations take things (like a Vespa for example) apart efficiently and put them back together properly (or at least creatively) ski better sing code in them fancy "computer languages" rappel (and other technical-climbing maneuvers) sculpt organize my entire life without trying, or even realizing I've done so learn a trade without having to start from the beginning
People who own boats, pools, hot tubs or vast tracts of land

People who've learned, or who are learning, and maybe even know how to show others effectively, how to overcome terror, rage, painful longing, life-loathing, immature defiance, desperation, self-disappointment, morbid impatience, a frenzied, frantic, torment

People who, in order to be honest and sane in this insane world, seek and find Truth and swallow it hard, digest it, and whenever then possible, deal.

Those who know when they can't deal, and so they talk to people (for example) who ask nothing in return - rather than go looney, or become dependent upon the wrong people or things, and end up once more paranoid, angry and desperate, when isolation pushes you until every muscle aches.

Anybody who knows where life-saving Truth can be found - and where it can't - and can summon the balls to sit down and shut the fuck up (unlike me most times), and listen long enough to sift, and to hear the Truth they'd never realized may apply to their own lives, thoughts and behavior. And is willing to keep doing it in order to live, and to be capable of living with others; and to be capable of helping others live.

Anyone who finds me interesting - or at least tolerable for periods of time

Anyone whose own company is something they enjoy most of all I want to meet people who believe in second chances . Especially if a third isn't completely out of the question.

Creative, spiritual yet critical thinkers. Someone who will welcome me in, never presume that if I ramble just a little, I am any more retarded than I actually am; and who will acknowledge my sincere if clumsy attempts to share some conversation or activity.

People who have spontaneous fun without much effort, particularly without needing to get even a little bit fucked up - and those who never take me or themselves too seriously.

A woman who doesn't mind if I treat her as very special - and who doesn't confuse my attention with scrutiny.
One day I hope to have words appropriate to convey how incredibly thankful I am to the people that somehow came into my life and changed it, gave me the courage to change myself, remarkably for the better. Spiritual, big-hearted people perhaps with problems of their own, who have reminded me of certain things, and shown me great new ones - a fantastic piece of music, or how and where to achieve a measure of peace - without trying but just by being who they are. If the time is not gone forever, I want to keep meeting you, and more like you. FAITH REPLACES FEAR.
I'd probably rather be here:

Music:

Last.FM Music Geeks ARISE!

more from the Sleepyheads
here I like short songs . I enjoy music that rocks, and music that doesn't; "dour" or downtempo music as well as pop... I particularly like guitar - its voice clear, direct. But also lots of stuff with less-frequently used instruments. Anything really, as long as the passion comes from the words and musicianship, and it's not all style at the expense of technique. Lyrics, if any, should convey mood or purpose, by somebody that really understands and cares. And sings them with conviction.

I like stories. There are lots of great storytellers, not all of them from Texas.

Arrangements can work well, too. Gil Evans and Brian Wilson gave my life some color. The Who gave me Maximum R & B. To me, that means that it's okay to feel (yeah, and be "stylish") while ROCKING OUT. I needed to know that. Movies:

I haven't seen any lately. And MySpace snipped off my movie/TV/Books lists (because I was using too much Space?) so I'll leave this mostly empty for awhile to allow more room for music. Although I've been watching the documentary No Direction Home and it's the balls.

Television:

Tom Verlaine (gtr/vcls), Richard Lloyd (gtr/vcls), Fred Smith / Richard Hell (bass/vcls), Billy Fica (drums)

Recently I've been staying up late (when I get permission) to watch THE JOHNNY CASH SHOW

Check out some of the guests:

Neil Young Joni Mitchell 1 Joni Mitchell 2 Joni Mitchell 3 Joni Mitchell 4 Joni Mitchell 5 Joni Mitchell 6 Jerry Lee Lewis Derek & The Dominoes 1 Derek & The Dominoes 2 Roy Orbison Mother Maybelle Carter Chet Atkins Bobbie Gentry The Monkees (Johnny doesn't seem in the least embarrased) The Carpenters Marty Robbins Andy Kaufman Bob Dylan 1 Bob Dylan 2 June Carter Cash Johnny Cash & June Carter What is Truth?

Books:

The Great Divorce, A Confederacy of DuncesGreil Marcus, Lester Bangs, Richard Meltzer, Peter Guralnick (I had a nice reading list right here and MySpace ate it last year for some reason) I like short stories of André Dubus and Raymond Carver. I recently read Motherless Brooklyn by Jonathan Lethem and loved it ("Soon to be a Major Motion Picture" directed by its star Edward Norton). Suspense: Thomas Harris. Crime: Raymond Chandler. Jim Thompson. Politics and Humanity: Milan Kundera. W. Somerset Maugham. Shakespeare. Adventure: Alexandre Dumas. Robert Louis Stevenson. SF: Ray Bradbury. Isaac Asimov. Stanislaw Lem.

Heroes:

I idolize no human being. (Pedestals are a temporary toy, for looking up ladies' skirts. I want a look or feel, I make an educated request.) That said, there are some exceptional people, along with the animals and children who are as close to God as anyone. The wonderful staff at Jaho Coffee & Tea on Derby Street over there in Salem (my former neighbors) for their astonishing composure, tolerance, kind cheerfulness, and forbearance in the face of Salem's onslaught of tourists - who are often obnoxious and nearly always slow and confused.
live Slow.
Survivors; storytellers; those who simply reach out and help someone in need without talking about it; Donnie Meetings; Jim Abbott ; the wicked-cute blonde accidental-neighbour who I can only hope is free; and everyone that speaks, sings or works for justice.
...like journalist/essayist Keith Olbermann of MSNBC. Many of my other heroes are the great pranksters. (I think this may have been me , with Blind Boy Grunt.)
