Life on the V: The Story of V66

V66 Documentary Film!

About Me

Boston, 1985. A new television station is found by the cable-deprived citizens of southern New England, as they channel surf the higher ranges of local UHF. Those in northern Rhode Island bumped into it while watching reruns on the Providence Channel 64, while others north of their tiny border dropped down a couple of notches from the Cambridge-based 68. What they may have discovered, depending on when they landed on channel 66, was their favorite music video hosted by a VJ they had never seen before. The first thought to enter their minds may have sounded something like, “Wow, MTV is local now? Isn’t MTV only on cable?” As they sat back and watched the action unfold, their answers arrived. It was not MTV. It was V66.LIFE ON THE V follows the history of V66, from its creation, inner workings and initially high success to its abrupt and sudden disappearance just 18 months into its on-air life. The station’s creators along with its original VJ’s and staff will share their personal stories of working on the V – interviews with music celebrities, local unknowns that would later blossom, relationships that were born and how they made it all come together. Fans of the V will also contribute their memories and how the station impacted their lives.Created by Massachusetts radio personality John Garabedian, V66 launched in February, 1985. Its goal was to function as a local MTV to the Boston-based college crowd at the peak of the music video era. While they played videos that would normally be found on MTV, they also gave local and international artists that had been turned down by the other networks a chance to shine with live performance and high exposure. Under V66, unknown artists like Aimee Mann and her band ‘Til Tuesday and The Dream with Gary Cherone and Paul Geary (an early incarnation of Extreme) were seen on TV for the first time.LIFE ON THE V is scheduled to begin shooting in 2008. Co-produced by Breaking Branches Pictures and Cruising In The Van Productions. Co-directed by Christian de Rezednes and Eric Green.Meet V66 Doc Filmmakers!!
