“I’m ready for anything
Like the white album or cheap cocaine
And next week I’ll probably start working out... – ‘I’m Trying’
Swiss punkabilly party-harders The Peacocks all collected neat, nice, and as prim n’ proper as possible, mixing the best with some rarities, so doing exactly what it says on the tin. They can possibilly be passed off as too skate/pop punk for ‘Billy purists but that should just be water off a ducks arse to most people. Doubters should take a bath and wipe the pomade out of their ears. Scepticisms about any possible lightweight-ness can be stomped on by the sheer delightful powder rush of ‘Want It Now’, ‘For You’ and ‘I’m Not Around’ showing that touring around from the Swiss valleys to every vanishing point still visible can only add to their sarcastic and askance look at the world. Cutting this with their pop-anthemic edge coming from The Clash and moreso Generation X rather than The Offspring makes it a potent ‘pit pounding force that stomps around your serotonin level, scrambling it about like a new type of designer drug nicknamed Stormin’ Norman has been approved by The Geneva Convention.- Stu Gibson

“Hand me your heart I need to break something... – ‘Kiss Off’
It̢۪s common in some circles to assess every all-girl guitar band in relation to The Runaways. It would be entirely possible in this case too but crucially The Applicators absolve all superfluous comparisons in a tough-ass Texan attitude that The Runaways could only have had in Kim Fowleys̢۪ dirtiest, most diseased dreams, coming on hard like a Girlschool who paid attention and crafted some great tunes. From the arse-end of Austin carrying a new 12 gauge primed with pop punk of the utmost propriety, it̢۪s more possible to imagine them crossing state-lines kicking dumb-ass guys who just view a girl band as eye candy so far into touch they end up head first in a spittoon in Tijuana, while gleefully teasing them with cute-eyed but hard-hearted floor-hitting songs like wasted, wanton winks. Along the way they also happily slam the toilet cubicle door shut on any initial preconceptions about similarities to the dreaded Donnas and instead revel in the glorious pop nous that The Go-Go̢۪s enjoyed, squandered but at least it̢۪s passed along somewhere, toughened up under the desert sun and dry, Tequila torched air and over-hauled and hepped up for whatever year people reckon it is.- Stu Gibson

The Loose Skrews
"Have Another Brew" (www.myspace.com/kingfingrrecords and www.hairball8.com). Hailing from the boonies and barrooms of Georgia, The Loose Skrews unleash a filthy, menacing barrage of hammer-fisted musical mayhem that's equal parts Scum Rock and Rotgut Punk. With such frenetic, whiskey-wrecked songs as "When The Going Gets Tough", "Try And Fail", "First Comes The Bottle", "Don't Ask You For Nothing", "Loose Skrew Brew Crew", "Drink Up You Bastards", "Fuck With Me Not", and "Boozed Up And Burned Out", The Loose Skrews guide the listener straight to Hell in a barbwire-weaved handbasket. Their aim is obvious: gettin' drunk, brawlin', and livin' the crapped-out hand the wicked bitch called life deals on a daily basis. Who could ask for anything more? (CD)-Moser

The Applicators
My Weapon
Austin, Texas’s own five-member pop punk band has a lot going for them on their new album. Their musicianship is tight, they definitely know how they want to sound and what they want to say. My biggest problem with their album is that (and I’m very open to the possibility that it’s just a ‘me’ thing) what they say is lyrically derivative. I’m not usually one to harp on lyrics, and there’s many a band out there that could be called out on this too, but the songs on this album seemed to be about the same stuff – with the same observations and discoveries being reworded differently to say the same thing. Kind of like my reviews! If you already know The Applicators and love them, you’ll be satisfied. The riffs are catchy, a lot of it is pretty fun and it got some solid production. – Boyd Wunder King Fing’r Records/Hairball8 Records
The Peacocks
Greatest Hits & Misses
I love love love this CD! In fact I loved it so much I even got that sad feeling I get when I first discover something that has been around forever and in discovering it, I also realize that I have lived the last twenty years of my life not knowing what I was mission. Hmmmm, could the album title refer to that exact sentiment? Is that indeed the hidden meaning of the greatest missâ€Â¦ or is that just the doob talking? Whatever. This is the best album I’ve heard in years from a band that has been round since 1994. The Peacocks sound like what would happen if The Old 97’s and Fountains of Wayne got married, had a baby, stuck a double bass in its hands and weaned it on surf punk. Did I mention they’re from Switzerland? Yeah, that part didn’t make sense to me either. –Ruby Soho Hairball8

THE APPLICATORS
“MY WEAPON CD
I don’t think I have ever played a CD and immediately thought “these are the next big thing! I am a cynical 40-year-old punk, who has never been a big fan of the recently successful pop-punk bands. However, these 5 gals from Texas have the genre totally whipped on this sophomore release. “My Weapon has hooks galore, vocal harmonizations and a driving rhythm section. I won’t bore you with comparisons to The Applicators, do yourself a favor and be one of the first to discover this rocking band. (BBB) (www.hairball8.com)
THE KOFFIN KATS
STRAYING FROM THE PACK
If the world were fair, The Koffin Kats would be as well known as The Nekromantix, Tiger Army and HorrorPops. Unfortunately, it isn’t fair, so I am going to rally around the KK cause at every opportunity. This is their third release and is even better than their self-titled debut. From the opening instrumental of “March of the Waynos through to “For Hire, what you get are eight blistering tracks that leave you begging for more. Listen to “Buzzkill Bitch and tell me that these guys don’t know how to rock your world. This 3 piece from Michigan are still influenced by the Misfits and The Damned, but only in good ways, and they have continued to develop their own style. The stand out track is “Mechanical Youth, although I never skip any of the others. I rarely salivate over a CD; however, this is an exception, so give it a try and buy it. (BBB) (www.hairball8.com)
MAD MARGE AND THE STONECUTTERS
S/T CD
Another great release from Hairball8 Records. Mad Marge and the Stonecutters give you a healthy slap of straight ahead psychobilly with excellent bass slapping, tight drumming, the right amount of guitar and Marge’s excellent vocals. This CD really brings to mind the HorrorPops. I defy you to listen to the opening track “Monsters without getting the chorus “Monsters hiding under your bed, whoa stuck in your head! If you are not a fan of the genre you will probably not even give this a listen, which is a shame. (BBB) (www.hairball8.com)
OUR CORPSE DESTROYED
AVENGE YOUR CITY
Not since the might Bad Brains have I heard anyone mix religion and punk so effectively. Even if Christianity is not your cup of tea, OCD grab your attention with their easy to listen to yet hard hitting sound and Unseen/Abrasive Wheels type sing-a-long lyrics. “Compulsion means a lot to me personally as it deals with compulsive tendencies (hence this band’s original name Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, which incidentally, I also suffer from). The song “Crucify Me hits home, as I am a fellow Christian. Ever get the feeling a band made a record just for you? This CD is worth the purchase price even to you folks who think you can summon the Prince of Darkness by wearing all black and listening to Dimmu Borgir at midnight on Halloween. (BBB) (www.hairball8.com)
LOOSE SKREWS
“HAVE ANOTHER BREW CD
Speedy, aggressive punk. Straightforward in that driving almost metal GBH way, with lots of songs about drinking and being fucked up, and other stuff you̢۪d expect. Scratchy vocals keep a tune pretty good. Certainly numerous cuts above GG Allin. (RK) (Hairball8 Records/www.hairball8.com)
