SPIRAL QUARTET

Depuis sa création en 2005, le Spiral Quartet développe un projet artistique fondé sur une conception contemporaine de l’improvisation et de l’écriture. Bien sûr, le jazz moderne constitue pour lui une influence majeure, mais la musique contemporaine est également importante dans son approche esthétique.
A l’heure actuelle, le répertoire du groupe comprend aussi bien des compositions originales, des standards américains et français que des traditionnels Turcs. Le Spiral Quartet ne fait pas de distinction entre les différentes pièces qu’il aborde. Celles-ci sont traitées de manière personnelle tant sur le plan de l’harmonie, que sur celui des textures ou de l’improvisation.
L’énergie et la cohésion du Spiral Quartet - que ses prestations sur scène ne font que renforcer - s’expliquent par la connivence artistique et humaine qui existe entre les différents membres du groupe.
Les traditions tant jazz que classique sont les bases de leur inspiration, mais à une époque frileuse et sursaturée de mémoire, leur objectif artistique est de s’aventurer dans le présent avec tous les risques que cela comporte !

REALISATIONS ET PROJETS DU SPIRAL QUARTET

Novembre 2OO5 : Création du groupe

Décembre 2005 : enregistrement d’un CD de démonstration contenant un standard de la Chanson Française, un traditionnel Turc et trois compositions originales.

Avril 2006 : Concerts à Istanbul : CRR et Université de Galatasaray

Septembre 2006 : Enregistrement du CD « Kaléidoscope » à Udine en Italie. Ce CD repose sur des compositions originales signées pour l’essentiel par Philippe Poussard.

Décembre 2006 : Trois concerts à l’Istanbul Jazz Center. Le répertoire abordé par le groupe ces trois soirs-là se fonde sur des grands standards américains et de la Chanson Française ainsi que sur des traditionnels Turcs célèbres.

Mai 2007 : Concert au Centre Culturel La Jonquière (Paris). Interprétation de la suite « Kaléidoscope » dans sa totalité.

Juillet 2007 : Enregistrement d’un CD de démonstration contenant quatre traditionnels Turcs et une composition originale.

Janvier 2008 : Sortie du CD « Kaléidoscope » sur le label allemand Konnex Records.

Courant 2008 : Projet d’enregistrement du SPIRAL QUARTET en collaboration avec des musiciens turcs. Production turque ou française ou co-production franco-turque. Concerts en France et en Turquie.

Since 2005, the Spiral Quartet has developed an artistic project based on contemporary improvisation and writing. Of course, modern jazz is one of our main influences but it’s not the exclusive one. Contemporary music is also very important in our approach.
At the moment our repertoire is built half on compositions and half on standards (american and french songs) and a few turkish traditionals. The energy and the cohesion of the group come from the human and artistic connivance which exists between us.
We have full respect for great musicians of the past both in jazz and classical traditions but in a time of over-cautiousness and memory overload, we want to venture into the present without always looking backward.

There is something of Quest here and we are hardly surprised to read in the introductory notes that Philippe Poussard refers to David Liebman and Richard Beirach. His sound on soprano does not really conceal Liebman’s influence, through his tone’s flexibility and intonation which serve an intense expressiveness in the quiet waters, through the enormous compressions which split the sound and accelerate the flow dramatically, and through the melodic quality of his phrasing in all tempos. It looks as if his Spiral Quartet had taken over the experience of Quest’s total improvisations in the album « Of One Mind » recorded in 1990, just before the group’s disbanding, to follow it up through a return to writing, henceforth emancipated from standard repertoire. Philippe Poussard draws from the XXth century’s classical music what is necessary to increase tenfold the impulse of the interactive improvisation he examplifies with a constant renewal of strength.
"Kaleidoscope" is a six-part suite which spreads out splendidly and during which the band goes back and forth between strict instructions and free talk, sometimes over funky rhythms and sometimes over rhythms touched slightly by the tip of the brushes or over all kinds of floating rubatos.
In the background, a web of brief themes, series, modes or simple key centers appears whose expression is shared between the members of the band in various ways. The bass player, François-Charles Delacoudre, has an admirable mastery of pulse and space. The piano player, Bruno Angelini, reaffirms his ability to break the habits of conformist harmony in favour of an acute sense of narration and a very orchestral use of the piano. On drums, Christian Lété’s skilful use of colours and story-telling is particularly well emphasized here. A fascinating CD from beginning to end, never dry, helped by a wonderful sound recording.

The band - founded by the french saxophone player and composer Philippe Poussard - has been performing and recording since 2005. The musicians have developed a music based on contemporary writing and improvisation.
They’ve just released « Kaleidoscope », an album which mainly contains a six-part suite. Each part contributes to narrate a whole story.
They also have developed a repertoire based on american, french and turkish standards. They recorded a (demo) CD « Diyar diyar caz » recently and performed in Istanbul one year ago.
Kaleidoscope is really an impressive album.
