History of The Black Wall Street
The Black Wall Street was the name give to Greenwood Avenue of North Tulsa, Oklahoma during the early 1900s. Because of strict segregation, Blacks were only allowed to shop, spend and live in a 35 square block area called the Greenwood district. The circulation of Black dollars only in the Black community produced a tremendously prosperous Black business district that was admired and envied by the whole country. The dollar circulated 36 to 100 times, sometimes taking a year for currency to leave the community. In comparison, now a dollar leaves the community in 15 minutes. The prosperity produced self-pride, self-sufficiency, and self-determination. The business district, beginning at the intersection of Greenwood Avenue and Archer Street, became incredibly successful and vibrant. By 1921 this flourishing community had its own bus line, two high schools, one hospital, two newspapers, two theaters, three drug stores, four hotels, a public library and thirteen churches. In addition, there were over 150 two and three story brick commercial buildings that housed clothing and grocery stores, cafes, rooming houses, nightclubs, and a large number of professional offices including doctors, lawyers and dentists. Tulsas prosperous community boasted some of the cities most elegant brick homes, well furnished with china, fine linens, beautiful furniture and even grand pianos. Today, The Black Wall Street movement means Rebirth and Revitalization of Urban America Coast to Coast. This is not a segregation movement, but one of peace and unity bringing all races together to share in the spender of those communities that are being resurrected from near extinction. The Future - Pleasantville, New Jersey
Given the opportunity, John Abbey intends to build at a minimum 180,000 square feet of retail space with a delicate balance of modern and historical themes that are a welcomed beautiful site for the community and visitors to stroll and shop. At the initial redevelopment site, plans are being considered to build a supermarket, a studio and arts center, a business and retail complex, a themed music venue club and restaurants. There is also an interest in investing in a variety of municipal projects to be tied into the attractive theme. This area will support substantial business and residential redevelopment and our commercial division (Viper) and our residential division (Quantum) are drafting a variety of models that will creatively use the land for business and residential growth.
We hope to make Pleasantville the Model Urban Development Project that will be echoed nationwide. We are in talks with many states throughout the country and intent to continue building Black Wall Street commemorative projects after Pleasantville. Presently, we are also exploring another New Jersey redevelopment project in Penns Grove.
As a nations leading developer / builder of commercial retail operations, Viper Construction Group anticipates numerous building contracts once ground is broken on this initial Pleasantville project. It is anticipated that other businesses will have Viper building their presence in Pleasantville, Penns Ville and other cities throughout the country.
