Francesco Chebat

Jazz Pianist and Composer

About Me

FRANCESCO CHEBAT, pianist and composer, studied with maestro Elio Cantamessa, pianist at Teatro alla Scala, Milan.
In 1999 he graduated in piano at “Giuseppe Verdi” Conservatory in Milan, where he also studied Composition with maestro Massimo Bertola.
He attended several seminars and courses mainly focused on jazz music with Tino Tracanna, Giovanni Tommaso, Larry Monroe, Dino Govoni and others.
In 2006 he graduated in Aerospace Engineering at “Politecnico di Milano”.
He works both with Italian and foreign musicians and actors (Attilio Zanchi, Marco Castiglioni, Paolo Tomelleri, Emilio Soana, Marcos Vinicius, Carlo Bagnoli, Marcello Noia, Walter Ganda, Francesco D'Auria, Riccardo Fioravanti, Ney Portilho, Riccardo Vigorè, Carol Sudhalter, Roberto Piccolo and many others). He played for “Piccolo Teatro di Milano” and he performed in many theatres, jazz festivals and clubs such as Blue Note in Milan.
In 2007 he recorded “Imprinting”, his first CD as a leader with Attilio Zanchi on double bass and Marco Castiglioni on drums. All songs in the CD are composed by Francesco Chebat, who choose traditional acoustic trio as the best way to perform his music.
He has been working for many years with Gianni Satta (trumpet) and Cesare Bernasconi (drums). With them he founded “Tutu trio” inspired by the famous Miles Davis’s album. With “Tutu trio” Francesco plays synthesizers and the sound of this trio is full of electric influences. “Tutu trio” plays songs composed by Francesco Chebat, Gianni Satta and jazz standards written by Thelonious Monk, Herbie Hancock, John Coltrane, or pop groups as Beatles, Cream and others.
He works with vocalist Martha J. as pianist and arranger.
He is also the pianist of sax player Beppe Aliprandi’s “Blue Totem”, a project in wich jazz standards meet ethno-music from Africa and Middle-East: the result is a different point of view to renew the tradition.
He approached Argentina and its culture first with "Café con Pan", with actor Valerio Bongiorno, then in "Storie di Tango" with Martha J.
He appears in "Numbert, il passeggero del secolo" a theatre monologue with solo piano live music, performed in many theatres in north Italy.
He played in the Vanni Stefanini trio a Latin rhythms specialist drummer. This trio, with Attilio Zanchi on double bass, played at the Blue Note of Milan and in 2004 recorded a CD entitled "Nobody knows".

This CD by Martha J., released on April 2008 for Music Center Records, is dedicated to jazz standards. This is a project that comes after almost ten years of live performances, as explained in the booklet: "After all these years of playing standards here and there, I finally made up my mind and recorded some of the songs I like most. I can't help feeling that this CD contains musical elements, suggestions and emotions that I took from all jazz musicians I had the honour to play with in these years. I wish I could have had them all to play with me on this CD... Of course this was impossible, but I always keep them all in my heart. This work represents myself as I am now: that's it! Special thanks to Francesco Chebat, who helped me a lot and made this work possible. I want to thank Roberto Piccolo and Stefano Bertoli, who allowed themselves to get involved and put not only notes but also their enthusiasm in this project. They created a very special rhythm section, playing these old songs with a modern feel. It's been a lot of fun... pota!"

"No one but you"

Only vocals and piano for this CD by Martha J. and Francesco Chebat.
This project is the result of a long collaboration between Martha J. and Francesco Chebat. These tracks were recorded in the same session as 'That's it!'. The idea was to use some of these songs to complete che CD with the quartet, but in the end they were enough to release another CD, 'No one but you'. 'No one but you' is a song written by Francesco Chebat and Martha J. This work presents a selection of jazz songs (some of them are not often played, like Lush life and Sophisticated lady) and a little tribute to Argentina, 'Gota de lluvia' composed by Felix Lipesker e Homero Manzi.
