It’s the color of a baby’s laugh. Music. It’s the sound of a blooming rose. Music. It’s the touch of a seductive whisper. Music. All of these energies are captured by the melodies and lyrics of Ria Alexander. This talented songwriter/artist has been using music to chronicle the human condition for several years.The origins of Ria’s musical development take us to Greensboro, North Carolina. Here, she was surrounded by the warmth and love of her parents, Howard and Rose Alexander, and her younger sister, Kellie. Music was the fifth member of the family. On any given day one could hear Nancy Wilson or Johnny Mathis flowing through the house. Thanks to her mother’s diverse taste in music, Ria was also introduced to broadway musicals and operas. Exposure to these various musical genres helped Ria to creatively fuse the boundaries of r&b, pop, jazz, and neo-soul into one melodious canvas.After graduating from Spelman College, with a Bachelors degree in Child Development, and Bowling Green State University, with a Masters in Reading, Ms. Alexander’s need to express herself musically began to intensify. She began to hone her musical skills in Atlanta, Georgia. The experience was life changing. Ria cut her teeth while writing and recording with producer, Chuck Blagmon. The experience included a featured vocalist credit on the song ‘Ain’t No Sunshine’, by East Side Cult. This song can be found on the soundtrack for the hit television show ‘OZ’.In 2001, she decided to move to the New York area to further her musical pursuits. That same year, she and the talented flutist, Richard Brown II, created the band ‘Black Diamond’. Recruiting members for the band led Ria to the New York music scene. The experience proved to be rewarding and enlightening.Ria has performed with an array of talented artists, including Elisabeth Withers, Glen Jones, Schon Jomel, and Lee Truesdale. She has also performed with several wedding and corporate bands.
