I play a shit-ton of instruments. Lessee ... Bass, Baritone, Tenor, Alto, and Soprano Saxophones, Clarinet and Bass Clarinet, Flute, Piano, B3 Organ, Keyboards, Electric and Acoustic guitar, Bass guitar, Drums, percussion, and I sing.
I guess the important thing is for me to be a working musician. I don't really subscribe to one kind of musical style, and that reflects on the wide variety of gigs one can see me perform at, from indie rock with I am the heat, to latin jazz with Chembo Corniel y Grupo Chaworo, to Afrobeat with Jojo Kuo, to R&B flavored jazz with Dion Tucker and Oddlogik, to straight-up R&B with GDO Soul. I've worked in the studio or live with a lot of artists, including but not just with Me'lisa Morgan, Mike Phillips, Jill Scott, Angie Stone, Angela Bofill, and all over the world, ranging from The Blue Note in NYC, the Kennedy Center in DC, and tours in Europe and the Carribbean with different groups.
Good music does not have to be exclusionary. One must strive to play at the best level one can achieve, without compromising accessibility as well as musical integrity. I'm still working on the balance, but I know one thing for sure: I'm able to live in New York, support myself playing gigs I enjoy, and not regret anything. Life ain't bad!
When I'm not playing music, I'm spending my time training for next year's Golden Gloves, an amateur boxing competition, and trying not to party too often. Suffice to say, I don't sleep much!
The word "I" was used so often in this, I've disgusted myself. Someone talk about something else already!
