My life as musician started pretty soon, back in the 90s, when I realized I wanted to play guitar .
I then started taking guitar and music theory classes in Venice which led me to gain a certificate in 2003.
In 2000 I finished my electronic college (which is directly comparable to a BA) and decided to carry on the same direction taken years before: music and technology as a synergic entity.
I enrolled at SAE technology college at the beginning of 2003 and gathered the Audio Engineer diploma at the end of 2004.
In the same year I got employed at Mayfair Recording Studios (London- www.mayfairstudios.co.uk) as maintenance engineer. during the following 2 years I had the opportunity to learn all the fundamentals of interfacing digital and analogue equipment, repair vintage gear and set complex and yet versatile sessions up.
John Hudson, CEO of Mayfair led me through the various and difficult steps of music recording with special attention to the technicality of the whole process, as well as the human side of things. sometimes it's quite hard to please a client, but the best way is to perfectly understand what is in their minds and replicate it in the "normal life" by satisfying their requests.
during that period I have been introduced to Sir Clive Kavan, long time maintenance engineer (Abbey Road Studios,Lenny Kravitz), who then became my mentor (as well as close friend) and from whom I have acquired the methodology and know how in the hard field of Audio Engineering maintenance.
At Mayfair Studios I was in charge of the 6 studios maintenance: I then had the marvellous opportunity to work inside the best mixing desks on the market (SSL 9000K series, Neve VR, EMI mobile desk, Amek BIG) as well as being responsible for all the ProTools / Logic rigs in the building.
In 2006 I took a break from London and went to work at Angel's Wings Studio (www.angelswings.it) where, with Nico Odorico, studio owner, we refurbished the control room, adding acoustic treatment, suffit mounting the main speakers and built a new rack containing area.
Pushed by a growing impulse we started buying and collecting Vintage gear, which I accurately restored to original specs, exponentially increasing the amount of outboard processing units available to the engineers.to mention a few:
-Telefunken V78 microphone preamplifiers (based on telefunken EF804 S vacuum tubes)
-Telefunken / Siemens V672 & V676 solid state mic preamplifiers
-Telefunken / Siemens U373a solid state compressor/limiters
-Siemens W295 "A" and "B" versions, solid state inductor based EQs
-Neumann PEV solid stated inductor based Mastering EQs (amazing tools...)
-Filtek MK3 opamp feedback based Equalizers
-Neumann 491 "A" and "B" opamp feedback based Equalizers
-Klein and Hummel UE1000 mastering equalizers (impossible to find)
-NTP 179-400 broadcast limiter
-Altec 436C compressor amplifier (extensively used by Paul Mc Cartney on The Beatles sessions)
-Neumann U473 (straight and "A" versions) broadcast compressor limiters
-MCI JH500 series eqs, gathered from 4 dismissed returns channels.
My background and experience allowed the studio to invest money on R&D developing a different approach to modern recording and mixing techniques: we started building and customizing our own gear.
the projects included the following:
Teletronix LA2A (with original specifications IN and OUT transformers, built by Sowter England)
Urei 1176LN black face with OEP and Lundahl IN and OUT transformers
SSL mixbuss compressor based on the original G+ series console main compressor modified with selectable side chain filters, dual mono as well as stereo units and lundahl OUTPUT transformers.
SSL 9000K ultra low noise microphone preamplifier
Neve 1073 microphone preamplifier (yes that is it!)
Neve 2254 compressor/limiter which has been built from scratch using original transformers and metal work. all the components and PCB where designed following the original project, adding a little more valuable signal path with panasonic,Wima and Styroflex capacitors, along with high spec 1% tolerance resistors.
and the most interesting project of them all "AW47" microphone which is mixture of AKG C12, Neumann U47, Sony C800 designs. no doubts this has been the most brave project of them all, as well as the most satisfactory!
In 2008 I moved back to London to Extend my experience as tech/musician
March 2008 I got a gig as full-time engineer at Funky Junk LTD where I still work as tech, although carrying on with other projects.
in April/June I worked as Sound Designer for "All Bob's Women" a West End show in Leicester Square, where I had the chance to work with people like Musician/Composer Sascha Puttnam, Director Russel Labey, Production Designer Jason Denvir and Light Designer Mike Robertson. The show involved 5 musicians (Drums, Bass, Guitar, Saxophone and piano), 6 singers/actors using Sennheiser HS2 headsets, mixed through a Yamaha DM2000.
This is briefly my professional life, I hope to be lucky enough to keep going in the Music Industry for a long time,as MUSIC IS LIFE!
