BBC Protests follow Olympic torch
The campaign «2008-FreeTibet» uses the Beijing Olympics to pressure the Chinese authorities for a fundamental change in occupied Tibet. By hosting the 2008 Games in Beijing, the Chinese leadership hopes to present China as a free and open society to the outside world. The reality is very different.
Our campaign highlights the systematic suppression of fundamental human rights. It deploys educational and protest activities to events related to the 2008 Games and seeks support from people around the world to press for freedom in Tibet and in China.
We call upon the athletes and the international community to use the opportunity of the 2008 Games in Beijing to voice their solidarity with the Tibetan people and support for the fundamental values of freedom and justice shared by the founders of the Olympic movement and people around the world.
We urge the IOC to guarantee freedom of expression during the Beijing 2008 Games and to revise its policy of ignoring the human rights situation in China and the situation in occupied Tibet.
We call on the Chinese government to respect the rights of the Tibetan people and to resolve the Tibetan issue through sincere dialogue with the Tibetan government in Exile and the Dalai Lama.
We urge all governments to pressure the Chinese authorities to immediately release all political prisoners in Tibet and China.
Seven high school boys detained for pro-Tibet slogans
New York, 9/22/07 - (AFP) - Human Rights Watch called on China on Thursday to immediately release seven Tibetan high school students it said had been detained on suspicion of writing pro-Tibetan independence slogans.
The seven students studied at a village school in one of China’s official "Tibetan autonomous" areas in Gansu Province and were among some 40 students detained by police on or around Sept. 7, the rights group said.
The boys were alleged to have written slogans calling for the return of the Dalai Lama and a free Tibet the previous day on the walls of the police station and other buildings in Amchok Bora village, the watchdog said.

The Panchen Lama
n May 1995, Chinese occupying forces abducted the six year-old Panchen Lama from his home in Tibet. No one there has seen or heard from him since. His abduction was a crime not only against an innocent child, but against the Tibetan nation and its way of life.
The whereabouts and welfare of Gedhun Choekyi Nyima are still unknown more than 11 years since he was abducted by the Chinese authorities. China defied numerous calls on the case, including one from the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child to "allow an independent expert to visit and confirm the well-being of Gedhun Choekyi Nyima whilst respecting his right to privacy, and that of his parents".
Despite additional calls from the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Louise Arnour, and the UK through the EU-China and the UK-China Human Rights Dialogues, China maintains that "the so-called Panchen Lama was a normal child, leading a healthy and happy life."
To succeed in putting real pressure on China we need to mobilise the full force of worldwide outrage at this crime. Your support is vital. All donations will support the appeal to campaign for the Panchen Lama’s freedom.
