The Yeti Crew:MC. Rebel -Tenzing Choephel; Renegade Momo- Tenzing Kunchyap;
T. Phuntsok- T. Phuntsok (he's not original lol)
Newest Members: Dikyi - Dikyi Yangzom; Mini Spit- Pasang Tashi TseringThe Yeti Crew started in 2007, but they always envisioned a crew earlier on. In '99 when the Tibetan Basketball tournaments were BIG, Choephel and Kunchyap started to form a basketball team of their own. The team was called the "Brooklyn Yetis'" and had other players, outside of Brooklyn, join their roster. However, the practices were grueling, and disputes within the team led to a disbandment of the yetis. Yet, the Yetis were not completely cast off and regular meetings with, then former Brooklyn resident Tashi (Mini Spit), led to occasional "rap talks" e.g. talks on what was currently acceptable in Hip Hop, random freestyle battles, etc. Which allowed for, and created a clearer path towards music. Tashi moved to Queens, the Yetis gradually disseminated into the two starting members again. Then in '04, Choephel and Kunchyap met upstair's neighbor, T.Phuntsok, and formed a genuine friendship with him. The Yetis took form again, when the music aspirations of all three members started to gain speed. In '05, Choephel's rap persona, MC. Rebel, came alive; as he started experimenting with different rap techniques and wrote down eveything he felt passionate about; namely his country, Tibet, and the forced occupation of the Chinese Communist Party. Kunchyap, took the rap persona of Renegade Momo, and a similar route to what he wrote down; distinguished by his laid back "old school" type of rhymes, Renegade Momo told stories, reminiscent of the days of Dana Dane and Slick Rick. T. Phuntsok, is a songwriter and singer whose yet to express himself fully, but his potential is evident in his lyrics. The now, three men group, started recording videos and began publishing tracks on myspace (listed below). They hooked up with songstress Dikyi Yangzom and are currently in the works on producing a poignant reflective track. Occasional meetings with Dikyi, crashing at her place (wut up to the roomies!) and just working and developing the sound even further; staying longer than any "wanted guest" simply shows the Yeti Crew is seriously starting to form. And from great ideas and songs they will truly become a dominating force (hope so!). Tashi contacted us, after hearing the songs on myspace, and though he is the youngest member in the crew, he still has some serious ideas! He reminded us on what we used to call him during our "rap talks", Mini Spit we got you! Aightttt....Altogether, the group called themselves: "The Yetis", and may become the first Tibetan group within the Tibetan community. The Yeti's follow in the tradition of the Great Hip Hop Acts, such as: the Beastie Boys, Run-DMC, BDP, ATCQ, Wu-Tang Clan, etc. But, carve a niche of their own, with their own style and flavor, added to the mix.Videography & Music history (so far..)
The Yeti's debut their first video in '07, a day after the March 10th Protest, entitled "Rap About Tibet", an accapella rap video full of imagery and passionate delivery. Their next video was a challenge to the crew because MC. Rebel wanted to recreate the feel of a mixtape into a video. The videos that came thereafter were a testament to this challenge, and
may truly be Hip Hop's first mixtape done, solely through the camera. With the help of Namgyal Yeshi, the first Tibetan rapper, they recorded their first track, "Like the Fire Needs the Air". The song was a historical dialogue on why Beijing should not be hosting the Olympics. Like the other productions made by the Yeti Crew, the song was based on lyricism and not on catchy hooks or verses. The Yeti Crew is still working hard on delivering more songs and videos for the masses to enjoy. And as MC Rebel stated in the beginning of the song, it certainly seems like "the yeti crew is 'taking over' like DJ Khalid".....................................................
