Welcome to Drew Rivers 'Gun-City Studio’
Every thing you see andhear on this page will be 100% created by me in the Gun-City Studio unlessotherwise stated. This includes all Instruments, Vocals, Recording, Mixing, Mastering, Production and all Artwork too.
Mr Drew was born a poor black child on the banks of Sainsburys back in 1975, but against all odds he overcame obstacles to become one of the biggest voices in music today.
Residing today in the heart of Nottingham, he continues to amaze audiences with his powerful vocals and lightning fast guitar licks which open even the most chaste of ladies hearts.
Although Mr Drew has spent many years playing in various Rock &Blues bands with some of Nottinghams finest musicians, he is nostranger to the underground world of Acoustic Music, his 'One ManAcoustic Show' has become very popular over the past few years.
With a repertoire of over 400 songs, Mr Drew will play pretty muchwhatever the crowd throw at him, be it: The Foo Fighters, AvrilLavigne, Neil Diamond, REM, Queen, Peter Gabriel, AC/DC, The Who,Steve Earle, Bon Jovi, John Denver, The Black Crows, ElvisCostello, Otis Redding, Barenaked Ladies, Alice Cooper, DavidBowie, Chilli Peppers, REM, Skid Row, The Darkness, The Doors, TheStones, Tenacious D... to some of the most cheesiest bollox youwill ever here such as: The Cheeky Girls, Sweet, Chirpy ChirpyCheep Cheep, 4 Non Blondes, Chubawumba Bryan Adams, Sam Fox andcertain sounds from the Rocky Horror & The Blues Brothers.
He also has a passion for playing 80's music such as: Paul Simon,George Harrison, Dead Or Alive, Simple Minds, Men At Work,Eurythmics, Alana Myles and so on...
Don't be fooled though, Mr Drew has a sensitive side... One only has to hear his breathtaking rendition of the Soft Cell classic 'Say Hello, Wave Goodbye' to understand why can make even the strongest of men break into tears, one man tried his best to hold back but a swift knee from Mr Drew to the mans groin really helped him get in touch with his emotions.
If you have never seen this true wonder in action before, make sure you head down to his next show, sell your children if you need too, you'll thank yourself that you did, as will Mr Drew, he loves his crowd as much as they will let him without getting slapped!
Mr Drew is also part of an acoustic duo called 'The Doughboys'with his very good friend Rob Nicholls (aka The Doughbert) They'redetermined to change peoples perseptions of acoustic music and arehell-bent on giving people a good time at almost any cost! Even topoint of playing in styles normally reserved for Rock Bands with afull back line, incorporating Guitar Acrobatics, Fretboard Wankeryand even disappearing into the audience with their guitars.
The Doughboys are fast becoming a favorite on the bike rallycircuit and have had excellent mentions in both 'Back StreetHeroes' and '100% Biker' Magazines, you can check out their pageby clicking the link below.
Both of the following videos were recorded live at Creatures 2nd ASC Rally in Peterborough in may of 2008.
The first video is one of my original songs 'When STEViE Sings', I first met STEViE at Creatures 1st ASC Rally in Bedford back in 2007, I'd heard great things about him so I was really looking forward to seeing him play. That afternoon we sat around in the paddock passing back and forth his beautiful mandolin playing various songs including a lot of Steve Earle and I was blown away by the guy, amazing singer songwriter and a great bloke! So that's what the song's about, two blokes with an appreciation for good tunes, good times and damn good booze at a great bike rally. (That Creature Juice was fantastic!)
Drew Rivers - When STEViE Sings (Live)There is a tradition at certain bike rallies and that is a Neil Diamond song must be played, it's the law! This footage is of me performing his classic song, 'Girl, You'll Be A Woman Soon'...Badly! Its unrehearsed, it's in the wrong key & I couldn't remember half the words but man was it fun to do! The woman on the right who's shaking her thang is my friend Lyn, an avid rally goer and a great spirit, the lady on the left is Erryl, who is also lovely and very full of Vodka.... Enjoy... they did!
Lyn You'll Have A Wobble SoonNow for the serious stuff...
I’ve been playing andcreating music in one form or another since 1991 when I got my first guitar,I spent many hours in my bedroom playing along to my favourite bands justlike many musicians out there. Two years on, I decided to leave the confinesof the bedroom and brave spanking it in public. Starting off at my local‘Gun City’ jam sessions and open mic nights, I met some of thegreatest unknown talent you will most likely never hear. Since then I’veventured out into other instruments such as: Mandolin, Bass Guitar,Keyboards & Drums, I’ll stress here that I am in no way a drummer but on thefew times I’ve got behind a kit, I could keep a steady 4/4.
I’d always wanted to playguitar since I used to have to wait for my bus to school outside of ‘ZebraMusic’ in Ilkeston, stood there gazing at all those wonderful sculptures ofwood and metal, calling to me like a dirty whore in the night. Though I’dnever even considered being a front-man until I saw the movie ‘The BluesBrothers’, just watching the late John Belushi blew my mind, here was thisguy, larger than life, giving everything he’d got, playing music that spoketo me with nothing but 100% pure passion, and that was the turn on… passion!I wanted to be on that stage and give everything I had to the audience infront of me, which to me was cool!
I got seriously intorecording around 2000, I’d done small bits and bobs before on the old AtariST and a 4Track, but I got myself an old PC, a Tascam Portastudio 4-Trackthat I used to hook up the guitar and mic, that combined with Cubase and Iwas away, writing, creating, tinkering and I’ve been a “studio rat†eversince, constant in my pursuit to achieve the perfect recordings, I’m stillfar from achieving that but to me, the fun’s in the journey.
I’m still a huge fan ofCubase, and use that more than anything, combining it with a greatcollection of the Plugins, Fx, Eq’s & Compressions around today and youreally can get professional recordings and produce really cool tunes all ITB(In The Box)
Most of my biggestinfluences aren’t the famous as you might expect, just the regular peoplethat I’ve grown up playing with, great Guitarists such as Barry Turner &Mike Lindell, Bass players like Richard Fitton-Perkins (PHD) & RichardDurrance, Drummers such as Brett Hallam (PHD), Paul Westmoreland (MickRutherford Band), Monty Oakley (Tightrope)
My biggest influencesthough are two of my best mates, one is ‘Pete Lynn’, I used to spend a lotof time at his house with his now lovely wife, Sue, just sat around, drinking, smoking and passing the acoustic guitars round, singing andplaying till all hours of the morning, making up silly drunk songs as wellas playing everything else as well. What he unknowingly taught me was howto really jam & busk, Pete is one of those players who instinctively knowswhat’s coming next in the progression and even if he’s only heard a songonce or twice, he can play it, he may not be the most technical of playersbut he does have is one of the finest ears for music that you will ever comeacross. Some people call me ‘The Human Jukebox’ as I know that many songs, but its Pete who’s the real jukebox, he has a talent that I have never seenbettered or equalled.
The other person who hasbeen a great influence over the years is ‘Paul Dunn’. I met Paul at thelocal jam nights back when I was very green, unlike many of the localmusicians, he never looked down on me for not being that good, he understoodthat everyone has to start somewhere and he took me under his wing, he neveractually sat me down and taught me anything but I did learn a hell of a lotjust by watching him and taking note, he was also the first to jump up onstage and back me where as others would shy away from the “noobsâ€. Paul isone of the finest technical musicians you could ever want to meet, he alsoinspired me to learn more than just one instrument, besides him being onehell of a Guitarist, he’s also a very accomplished Bass Player, Drummer,Keyboard Player and many other instruments he dabbles with as well. I couldnever thank that man enough for all he’s done for me over the years, both onand off stage.
Check out Paul’s band‘The PHD’ you’d be hard pressed to find a better all round accomplished bandout there!
