SARA NIEMIETZ
Biography
By the time she was four, Sara Niemietz knew she wanted to be a performer. On that spring day in 1997, Tim and Cheryl Niemietz decided to treat their daughter to her first concert experience - they had front row seats at the Chevy Chase Country Club Theatre in Wheeling, Illinois, and B. J. Thomas was headlining. Their toddler stood by the corner of the stage, caught up in the show and so enthusiastic that she began singing along on B.J.’s signature hit, “Hooked On A Feeling.” As he moved toward stage right, B. J. noticed the little girl singing and brought her up on stage with him. He placed his microphone in front of her, and without dropping a note, Sara began to sing the words to the song, displaying an uncanny sense of pitch and time. The entire audience was blown away, and B. J. was so taken by Sara’s singing that he dedicated the next show to her. The young lady’s career was off and running.
Five years later, her early promise was fulfilled and Sara made her Broadway debut as the young Carol Burnett in Hollywood Arms, written by Ms. Burnett and her daughter, Carrie Hamilton. Legendary director Hal Prince, who staged the production, remarked that Sara “possesses an extraordinary voice and acting honesty, and a personality that leaps across the stage.” A short time later, Sara originated the title role of Pamela in Pamela's First Musical, based on the book by Wendy Wasserstein, with music by Cy Coleman and David Zippel. Ms. Wasserstein praised Sara as “an astonishing performer.”
Having relocated to Los Angeles from her native Illinois, Sara began to pile up a significant list of credits. She started by releasing her first CD, Live At The Cat Club, produced by Charles Faris, which chronicled her amazing 12-song set at the noted venue. Then, she sang the national anthem for both the LA Dodgers and the San Diego Padres, and showed off her recording skills by appearing on the popular “Sugar Beats” CD as a lead singer. She was also the singing voice of Polly Pocket, and she was tapped to sing the end credit song in the animated Barbie DVD, Barbie as the Princess and The Pauper.
In addition to musical appearances, Sara’s acting career began to take off. Featured appearances on Providence (NBC), First Monday (CBS), and Gilmore Girls (The WB) led to a stint as Polly in the hit feature film, Akeelah and the Bee, with Laurence Fishburne and Angela Bassett.
In 2005, noted film composer Christopher Young was so taken with Sara’s singing that he hired her to provide the lead voice in his score for the number one box office hit, The Exorcism Of Emily Rose. After completing the music, Young remarked that “Without Sara’s voice, there would be no score – I have never in my life seen someone at her age so thoroughly professional.”
In between acting and maintaining an “A” average at school, Sara has also managed to record a new independent CD, Without A Net. The collection contains five stylistically diverse songs that Sara originally recorded as demos. When excerpts from the demos were posted on her MySpace site, they garnered in excess of 190,000 plays. Demand for the music from over 30,000 MySpace friends was so great that Sara teamed with well-known record producer John Boylan and the CD was released in November of 2006.
In addition to Without A Net, Sara is featured in the cast recording of the upcoming musical based on the film, Teen Witch. Larry and Tom Weir, who wrote all the music for the famed 1980s cult movie classic, are preparing Teen Witch The Musical, and have released a newly-recorded CD of all the songs. Sara sings lead on three of the tunes, and the CD is currently available everywhere.
Most recently, Sara has become the toast of the Los Angeles theatre community. After appearing in the workshop production, she landed the coveted role of Patrice, one of the principals in Jason Robert Brown’s new musical, 13. The production, which featured an all-teen cast, enjoyed a two-month run at The Center Theatre Group’s Mark Taper Forum in downtown Los Angeles. According to director Todd Graff, Sara was perfect for the part: "She had the vulnerability and the sweetness and the intelligence that the character needed. And she sang her butt off," Graff added. Sara’s reviews have been phenomenal: Daily Variety praised her as a “standout” who has “genuine warmth.” Curtain Up magazine crowed that “Niemietz shines during her solo, and takes impressive command of the stage with only a notebook sharing the spotlight.” Perhaps the LA Daily News summed it up best when they predicted that “we will be hearing much, much more from the likes of Sara Niemietz.”
After having completed “13”, Sara is back in school, enjoying her friends like any teenager, and spending her spare time concentrating on her music. She loves playing her guitar and working on her computer-based home recording studio. Lately, she’s been writing her own songs and hopes to collaborate with other writers in the coming year. In fact, LA songwriter, Kirsten Proffit, who provided one of the tunes on Without A Net, is slated for writing sessions with Sara. The rest of her time will be taken up with auditions for feature films, television, and theatrical projects. Already, many of the industry’s leading casting directors are taking notice of Sara Niemietz - you can bet that the rest of the world won’t be far behind.
