NICOLAS KING
“Somewhere way back in time (maybe in another life), Nicolas was infused with the genes of Mel Torme, Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Steve Lawrence and Liza Minnelli. At that time, the powers that be stirred them up and out came the (now very young) voice of Nicolas King. I can't wait to hear him when he hits his stride in a few short years. This kid is amazing!â€

The Buzz: Nicolas King
By Brian Hallenbeck , Day Arts Writer
Published on 11/17/2007
Who: Nicolas King, 16, of Westerly.
Why you should know him: Before he turned 12, King had won parts in three Broadway shows and appeared on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno†and “The View.†A diminutive crooner with a voice and stage presence that belie his youth, he's been a regular in recent years on Jerry Lewis' MDA Telethon, and last month released his second CD, “Blame It On My Youth.â€
The Natural: King was born into a musical family that includes his grandmother, Angela Bacari, a former performer in her own right, and an aunt, Lisa Ferraro, who also sings. Bacari is a voice coach who manages King as well as Billy Gilman — the one-time Hope Valley, R.I., phenom who was 12 when he stormed the country music charts in 2000 — says she recognized her grandson's musical talent early on. “One day when he was 2 or 3, he was eating his Cheerios and snapping his fingers to jazz,†she says. “I thought, 'Oh my God.' â€
Broadway Baby: When he was 5, King won Talent America competitions in Providence and New York — “The trophy was taller than me,†he says — bringing him to the attention of New York casting agents, one of whom “signed him right up,†Bacari says. After appearing in commercials for such products as Dr. Pepper, Oscar Mayer Lunchables and Safeguard soap, King landed the part of Chip, the teacup, in “Beauty and the Beast,†one of Broadway's longest running shows. He was all of 8.
Timing is everything: During his “Tonight Show†appearance in 2000, King charmed Leno and the studio audience, and brought down the house with a Liza Minnelli medley. But the most fateful impression was the one he made on another Leno guest that night, actor Tom Selleck. When Selleck later was cast in a Broadway revival of “A Thousand Clowns,†he lobbied for King to play his nephew. Though the character was originally written as a 13-year-old, King, four years younger, got the part. More serendipity followed. When Carol Burnett and producer Hal Prince saw the show, they tapped King for a role in “Hollywood Arms,†an autobiographical play Burnett and her daughter were writing. King auditioned, and won, at 11, his third Broadway billing.
Fearless youth: Seated on a couch in his grandparents' home, King joins visitors watching recorded versions of his appearances on the “Tonight Show†and, in 2001, on “The View,†again with Selleck. The kid on the screen is a revelation to him, too. “Now, when I see myself, I think, 'I did that?' †he says. “When you're that young, there's no way you can comprehend what you're doing. ... Being that young, I had no nerves. Now, I'm more aware of it.†His mother Christina recalls that during his first Broadway engagement, during which the family stayed in New York, “We'd walk down the street (to the theater) with him singing the whole show all the way.â€
Staying grounded: “As I got older, there were no (acting) parts for me, so I started to do more singing,†says King, whose taste in music runs to show tunes, jazz and big-band standards. “I've really developed a love of it. I can savor it now.†He had met Minnelli, his favorite performer, through show business connections. He was her opening act during a series of shows in Florida last year, singing with her 12-piece band. Home-schooled by his mother since the sixth grade, King, an only child, says he's one subject away from completing his high school education.
In good company: For an assessment of King's talent, look no further than the notes that accompany his new CD. “Somewhere way back in time (maybe in another life), Nicolas was infused with the genes of Mel Torme, Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Steve Lawrence and Liza Minnelli,†writes Carol Burnett. “At that time, the powers that be stirred them up and out came the (now very young) voice of Nicolas King. I can't wait to hear him when he hits his stride in a few short years. This kid is amazing!â€

"ON CLOSING NIGHT: Beauty and the Beast--A Roaring Success" "A “tale as old as time†reached the end of the line July 29 when Beauty and the Beast gave its 5,464th--and final-- Broadway performance and at last took its leave of the Lunt-Fontanne, secure in its slot as the sixth longest-running show in Main Stem history.
No. 6 picked up stix, too, over the years becoming a northeastern Disney theme-park and catnip to susceptible tourists, setting house records at the Palace, where it opened in April of 1994, AND the Lunt-Fontanne, where it closed--a spread of 13 years and some change...
...The Cipriani is only two blocks away from the site of the show’s original opening-night party--The New York Public Library (Belle had a thing for books, you may recall)--and the closing-night party was affectionately sweetened with cast members over the years...
...The 16-year-old Chip was Nicolas King, who’s speeding his way through high school--he has Civics and Economics to go--and then he’ll return to the showbiz career that Beauty and the Beast began: “It got me on ‘The Tonight Show With Jay Leno,’ and one of the guests was Tom Selleck, who asked me to do A Thousand Clowns on Broadway with him. Liza Minnelli came to the opening and got me to be her opening act last year..."
