TRIBUTE TO THE LATE, GREAT, HARRY VAN ARSDALE JR. You are missed by all of us.
An excerpt, from "HARRY VAN ARSDALE JR. - LABOR'S CHAMPION". Mr. Van Arsdale, addressing a crowd of over 2,500 members of Local 3 IBEW, November.10,1949 - assembled at the International Convention in Washington, where they showed their defiance against the dirty politics of the day within the hierarchy of the International Officers.
" I want to thank each and every one of you for your support, because, as I have said before, there are times when things are discouraging. I think that no man could have a better reward, than to do a good job for a trade union. Some men set out in the labor movement with very high ideals and they get off the track because of discouragement and obstacles, and start thinking of furthering their personal ambitions. I'll take the memory of this vote of confidence to my grave."
Tribute to Heroes.

We are not your everyday cover band. We play nuggets, and not the kind that come from your nose. We started as an original band, but, hated playing for free, trying to prove ourselves. For example, playing in dives, on Tuesday and Wednesday nights. Then you had to be the first band on, and nobody was even there yet. And then, when there were people there, they wanted commercial stuff, they could care less about new sounds. Just ask R.E.M., Smashing Pumpkins, and what's left of the great Ramones, etc. College crowds are the best. They don't care what you play, as long as you don't do it like a bunch of souless Jerkboxes { jukeboxes }.
Oh well.... We jam on Rock-a-Billy, Surf Tunes, great one hit wonders, Raggae and so much more. We don't always hit all the right notes, but, we sure as hell play from the heart. You want perfection? That's what Jukeboxes are for...we are a live band, we adjust to the crowd, and the better they are, the better we are.
We have played Upstate quite a bit: "The Rainbow Inn", Greenwood Lake, New York.
New Jersey: " The Valley View Pub", West Milford,New Jersey.
We even did a family Labor Day bash for Derek Jeter's family. He couldn't be there though, much to the dismay of my ( Bobby "SLACKS" ) wife. But, she did get to meet his parents, and his beloved Grandma.
We also did a " Wet Down", dedicating a new EMT vehicle in, Upper Saddle River...that was great.
Here in Queens, where we are based, we have played :
" The BAY VIEW " Restaurant and Lounge, Broad Channel, Queens.
" The GRASSY POINT ", Broad Channel,Queens.
" The BAY HOUSE ", Breezy Point, Queens.
And we did quite a few gigs at the old "Johnny Russell's",Oceanside,Long Island.
NOW, AT LAST, we did our BREAKTHROUGH GIG at the, LEGENDARY, PHENOMINAL, BEST Rock and Roll venue, in all of NEW YORK CITY: KENNY'S CASTAWAYS - on March. 9th, 2007.
We had an awesome time. It was like a big party, and the crowd made us do an encore...what more can you ask for?
Thanks to Mr. Pete Fogel ( Booking Agent for KENNY'S ), and, the rest of the great staff at KENNY'S CASTAWAYS ( at 157 BLEECKER STREET - Between Thompson and Sullivan streets ), we had a great show and a wonderful time.
If you want to check us out, drop us an e-mail at [email protected],please add Dungaree Dog Gig Information in the subject line, thanks. Oh, and feel free to correct my spelling.
Okay, a little history: We'll start with Joey " Bones "-He grew up in the Bronx, is good friends with the brother of, well, I'll just call him Ralph "Magoo", from the "BLUES MAGOOS" famous for their hit song "We Ain't got Nothing Yet ", which we do in our set. He actually got to play a bit with Ralph on the tune before it hit big, he was just a young lad, as was I, when I first met Joey "Bones." Joe grew up with Ace Frehley of "KISS", also, Franky and Joey Gadler. Franky plays with the great "NRBQ". Joe was even given the opportunity to play for "NRBQ" as a teenager, but, his mom put the nix on that deal. He later went on to play in many bands, polishing his chops along the way.
In the late 70's he joined a band called "FATS DEACON and the DUMBWAITERS", which is where he ultimately became Joey "Bones", as that is how FATS introduced him on their first appearance on the "Uncle Floyd Show", for those of you who remember that program.
One of the best features of FATS' band was the fabulous Addie Murray, who was dubbed, "the fashion plate of show business", by Floyd himself. Addie was a monster on the Sax, and when she asked Uncle Floyd if she could play his piano, and he agreed, she blew him away by running off some monster Ragtime riffs. Floyd was ecstatic. Addie is still heavily involved with the folk music scene up in Saratoga, with her husband Olin. She runs the FOLK TIMES newspaper, and deals with Cafe Leena.
I was a big fan of the show, I had to watch it through static, as it came out of Newark,NJ on WHT channel 68, which at night became Whometco Home Theatre. One of the first cable movie networks.
In any case, I was a fan of the show, I mean, The "RAMONES" appeared regularly on the program, I was a diehard "RAMONES" fan. they're the ones who made me stick with trying to play guitar, and write songs.
I got to appear on that first "Uncle Floyd Show" as well, I was about 16, and I had long straight hair that covered my eyes, and went half way down my back. I wore a black leather MC jacket, with dog chains around my shoulder and all the same pins the "RAMONES" wore on their jackets. When I found out later, that FATS' light man, Larry, had watched the show with Marky Ramone, and that Marky made a comment about me trying to look like Johnny Ramone...well, I was ecstatic to even know I had been acknowledged by an actual "RAMONE." When later I got to meet, and hang, with the "RAMONES", while they were at " Floyd's " studio taping a show at the same time as we were, I was in heaven. I was living the life.
I got to meet WAYNE KRAMER ( the great, legendary guitarist, of the "MC-5" ) later down the line, after that first "Uncle Floyd Show" appearance, when he came in to SONGSHOP Records to lay down the lead track for a song FATS recorded called, "What you wanna be." I was a kid, I was in a professional recording studio, I had been asked to play the rhythm guitar track for a song that was going to be released on a 45 rpm single ( yes, this pre-dated CDs ). I was already in awe after doing the "Floyd" Show , then to be asked to play on a song by FATs himself, then here comes this cool looking dude, who saunters in with his axe, makes them run the song through once, then lays down what would become, the phenomenal lead track, for "What you wanna be" in the second play through. He hung for a bit, he wasn't yet in FATs band, he was called in as a studio musician for this project. So, I was asked by FATs to go lay down some power chords to back the rhythm. My arms were aching from all the practicing of the song leading up to this session, and then actually playing the rhythm track...I didn't think I could do it, my arms were dead from vamping on all those bar chords. Wayne heard me talking, and suggested I go in and just use fifths. I am self taught, and never studied theory or anything, so, I was dumbfounded. He showed me what fifths were, and I realized, I already knew how to play them, just didn't know what they were called. I didn't think they would work for power chords, but, he told me " just hit 'em hard, the engineer will do the rest." So, that was my first encounter with WAYNE, who, I only found out later, was a legend in rock history.
Soon after that, WAYNE KRAMER joined FATS' band. Joey "BONES" hit it off well with WAYNE, they had a little inside joke, they called themselves the "LAVOLIER" Brothers . There is a story behind that, but, it isn't what your dirty minds might be thinking of....
So, "BONES" and I, go back a long way, and we ended up, down the line, playing in variations of our own band. "The FURYS", "TRUMPED UP", and then we tried "The Dungaree Dogs " for a while. I was a big "Stray Cats" fan, and after misunderstanding a line from a "Little Richard" song( "Rip It Up" ), where he sings "..all the hip-hop cats and the dungaree dolls..", I thought he said "Dungaree Dogs", and then with the whole "Stray Cats" thing, it seemed like a great name. Well, there was controversy off and on with people not liking the name, and, me being defiant about it, ending up getting into a heated debate with our old bassist Sammy, and so on, and so on.
Joey "Bones" broke off for a time, worked around with some other bands for a time. In one particular band, that "Bones" and "WHEELS" were in together they met WALTER LIBERO.
Walter ended up coming to play with "Bones" and I, and did most of the Demo recording we have, along with playing the bass ( at the same time ). Things got hectic for WALTER and we kind of went on an extended break.
"BONES" ended up with the "Bona fide Creepers", where Bobby "Wheels" ( now a retired NY Firefighter, by the way ), played rhythm guitar ( he plays a myriad of instruments actually ).
At some point, I came back into the picture as the bass player for the "Bona Fide Creepers". That band never saw the light of day.
We ended up with the lead guitar player, we call him the "PRINCESS", me on rhythm guitar, "Wheels" on bass, and of course, Joey "Bones" on the skins. And guess what? we called ourselves "The Dungaree Dogs." And when our good friend, and, supporter, Mr. Al Marletta drew up the Dog's Logo, that's it, it finally stuck.
Our first big gig went over really well, and for some reason, that caused the "PRINCESS" to want to take full control of the act. But, we were still "DUNGAREE DOGS", "BONES", "WHEELS" and "SLACKS."
We had a good run with an extremely talented Keyboard player, Jeff, but, it was hard for him ( rehearsal wise ), as he had to travel an hour and a half to our (Dog Pound) rehearsal space.
So, after doing a year worth of gigs in Upstate NY, and ,Northern New Jersey, with Jeff, he trotted off.
But, the core was still intact, we three, " Bones ", " Wheels " and " Slacks."
Now, if you ever see us, you'll notice we each wear a silver skull ring, just us three ( and one special friend, who helps us out with certain matters,Thanks Steve T., the only other made DOG. ) Where we come from ( and you've probably heard the expression in movies, or, perhaps your own neighborhoods) when you make your BONES, you are in for life. So far, we three have been together most consistently, so, we kind of made it our little thing ( an inside joke if you will ), that we wear the skull rings because we have made our bones, and are the core of the DUNGAREE DOG FAMILY.
The "PRINCESS" was actually insulted that he had not been offered a ring. He was so close too. But ay, wadda ya gonna do? He's gone, and there's was nothing we could do about it.
Jeff...you almost had the ring too. :::: I'm Shaking my head :::: However, we appreciate all you contributed, and hell, we got to meet Derek Jeter's whole family in the process.
So, we are "DUNGAREE DOGS NYC--". And that is a brief ( well, for me, it's brief, believe me ) history of the group.
Come out and see us play, we want to make you jump and jive, but, you won't have to put any quarters in the slot, just dig what we play, we will do the rest. What we give you, will be heartfelt and real, the way it is meant to be with "Our thing." :)
PS: WALTER owns and Operates COTTAGE IN THE TREES RECORDS *TM - has seriously upgraded his equipment, and honed his engineering skills. And every now and then, fills in on short notice on Bass, if "Mr.WHEELS" can't make a gig. We owe WALTER a lot. I do believe he has a ring coming. ;) Myspace Layouts and SO much more from WhateverLife.com
