BARTS WONDERWINKEL

About Me

*BART DE COCK was born in SINT-NIKLAAS (BE); at the age of 6 he learned to play the blues harp (mouth blown HARMONICA) from his father, who himself played music without a musical education. When Bart was 8 years old, he started a classical music training at the MUZIEKACADEMIE, SINT-NIKLAAS; at that time it wasn't possible to study the accordion -his favourite- at the official music schools in Belgium, so -as a second "choice"- he had to take PIANO lessons.---------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------------------ ---------------------------*Two years later Bart's father found a worn out DIATONIC ACCORDION (melodeon) on top of a rubbish box and repaired it; Bart taught himself to play it; the big revival of the diatonic accordeon still had to start in Flanders, so nobody could show him. With this diatonic accordion in 1972 he won a "Contest for old accordionists" in Sint-Gillis-Waas. From the piano to the PIANO-ACCORDION is only a small step, and when father De Cock bought a cheap chromatic accordeon, Bart explored this instrument too.-------------------------------------------------------- -----------------------------------*Bart De Cock was 13 years old when he started -as an autodidact- to play the FLEMISH BAGPIPES, known from the famous paintings of Pieter Bruegel. He got even more fascinated by folk music and stopped his classical music training; in this experimental period he played different wind and string instruments, amongst which violin and mandolin.--------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------*In 1976 Bart De Cock and the LIBBRECHT-brothers were the founding members of the folkband KADRIL; with Kadril he recorded till now 7 CD's and 2 double CD’s.----------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------------------ --------------------------------------- *When his professional interests seemed to evoluate in a musical direction, Bart continued his classical music training: again the piano and now also theory of harmony at the music academy. From 1977 he studied at the LEMMENSINSTITUUT in Leuven; there he got the EERSTE PRIJS-DIPLOMA NOTENLEER (solfège), HARMONY and CONTRAPUNT and instrumental courses piano, ORGAN and RECORDER FLUTE------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------------------ ------*Already from 1979 he was as a BAGPIPE TEACHER at the "Jeugdmuziekschool" in Sint-Niklaas; there he participated at an instrument building course with Lode Bauwens (making a "HOMMEL", a typical Flemish zither type) and later on he builded some more folk instruments.------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------ -------------------------------------------------- *In 1983 he finished his studies as a LAUREAAT MUZIEKPEDAGOGIE (music pedagogy) at the LEMMENSINSTITUUT in Leuven, with a scription on DRONE INSTRUMENTS and a thesis on the IEPERSCH OUD-LIEDBOEK, an important folk song collection from the region of Ypres. At the same moment he became a MUSIC TEACHER SECONDARY SCHOOL in Sint-Niklaas: Technisch Instituut Sint-Carolus and Instituut Berkenboom Humaniora. At Berkenboom Humaniora he coaches the school band "SALTARELLO", a group which plays folk music amongst other styles; some of the ex-Saltarello members play in different folk bands now.-------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------*Between 1983 and 1988 he was DIRECTOR OF THE JEUGDMUZIEKSCHOOL at Sint-Niklaas.----------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------------------ ----------------------*He was founding member of the organisation “SPEELMANSTREFFEN” which kept folk music alive in the St.-Niklaas region during the hard 80's & 90's-------------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------*At the famous TRADITIONAL FOLK MUSIC WEEK organised by the Flemish band ’T KLIEKSKE (in Galmaarden & GOOIK) he's been BAGPIPE TEACHER from 1985, and several times he coached the session ENSEMBLE PLAYING----------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------*Between 1989 and 2005 he gave PRIVATE BAGPIPE LESSONS at SINT-NIKLAAS ("Kornemuze"). As a professional music pedagogue interested in didactics, he is working at the developement of a PROGRESSIVE METHOD TO PLAY THE FLEMISH BAGPIPES---------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------*With Kadril Bart De Cock participated at the LIEDBOEKEN-CD’s produced by DREE PEREMANS (VRT-Radio1). Doing this particular recording Kadril -with singer PATRICK RIGUELLE- was the first Belgian band evoluating from folk music to folkrock. With this band Bart De Cock played numerous CONCERTS IN BELGIUM (for instance the famous FOLKFESTIVAL DRANOUTER) and ABROAD (ENGLAND, THE NETHERLANDS, FRANCE, ITALY, SARDINIA, DENMARK, LUXEMBOURG, SPAIN, SOUTH-AFRICA, GERMANY, NORWAY, SWEDEN,...)------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------------------ --------------------------*After a trip to Sweden (and together with hurdy gurdy builder JOOS JANSSENS from Antwerp) Bart De Cock in 1991 introduced the NYCKELHARPA (keyed fiddle, a typical Swedish string instrument) in the Belgian folk scene.------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------ --------------------------------------*In 1994 Bart De Cock -together with Kadril violinist Peter Libbrecht- put the singing girls trio LAÏS on stage, at that time as a support act in the Kadril tour. On the first and second LAÏS CD Bart made and played instrumental arrangements with his bagpipes and nyckelharpa------------------------------------------------- -----------------------------------------------------*In the month june of 2000 Bart De Cock played live on the VRT-Radio1, a bagpipe duet with the famous folkrock musician ALAN STIVELL from Brittany.--------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------------------ -----------------------------------------------------*In 2001 -from ASTURIAS in the north of Spain- he brought the ELECTRONICAL BAGPIPES (VERSION MIDI SGM 200, invented by JOSÉ ANGEL HEVIA), and with the Kadril music he introduced this renewing instrument to the Belgian folk stage------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------*In august 2004 -during the Dranouter folkfestival- as a guest he played his bagpipes with the legendary Irish folk band THE CHIEFTAINS.------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------*He plays sessions as a STUDIO MUSICIAN, for instance THEATRE MUSIC (“Driekoningenavond”), FILM MUSIC (for instance the tune of the popular Uytterhoeven program “Morgen Maandag” on VRT-TV). He had his electronical bagpipes recorded on the CD "De wereld rond" of the girl trio K3, and in may 2005 on the song "Dansen" of the popular youth band SPRING.----------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------------------ ---------------------------------------------------*From september 2005 Bart De Cock was asked to start and coordinate a DEPARTMENT FOLK MUSIC at the STEDELIJKE ACADEMIE VOOR MUZIEK WOORD DANS in SINT-NIKLAAS (BE). Up from then he teaches the bagpipes and folk music there, as an official job with a subsidy of the Flemish Government.------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------------------ ----------------------------------------*In 2006 KADRIL celebrated it's 30th anniversary as the "central guest" on NEKKANACHT, in a full up SPORTPALEIS in Antwerp; specially for this occasion Bart De Cock gathered and conducted a bagpipe band of 130 "inland bagpipe players", quite a record in Flanders !----------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------*Since january 2008 he is working in a commission at the Flemish Government, to integrate folk music lessons in education--------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------DIS COGRAPHY:--------------------------------------------------- ----------------- 1986 KADRIL “Kadril” (LP) WBM 21002----------------------------------------- 1990 KADRIL “De vogel in de muite” DURECO 11 54782---------------------- 1994 KADRIL “Nooit met krijt” DURECO 11 60262----------------------------- 1996 KADRIL “De groote boodschap – Live” DURECO 11 62162------------- 1999 KADRIL “Eva” WBM 21007------------------------------------------------- 2001 KADRIL “All The Best” (double CD) WBM 21029------------------------- 2003 KADRIL « Pays » WBM 21039--------------------------------------------- 2004 KADRIL « La Paloma Negra » (double CD) WBM 21050---------------- 2005 KADRIL “De Andere Kust” WBM 21057----------------------------------1998 LAÏS WBM 21005------------------------------------------------------- --- 2000 LAÏS “Dorothea” Virginmusic Belgium (724385065729)---------------
