The Pre-school Years
I was very energetic & imaginative young child who loved to run naked in the yard as well as other child-like activities. I was more than a handful for my parents as well as others.
I think its important to remain as open & adaptable as a child is even as you become an adult. My imaginative & energetic nature would serve my well until my introduction to institutional education.
The K-12 years
My K-12 years proved to be more of a challenge as I now entered the more restrictive environment of Institutional Learning.
I went to a Catholic school for Kindergarten and began to realize that my energetic nature was more of a liability in their eyes. I was considered hyperactive & out of control.
Their solution was to call me a failure, diagnose me with ADHD, send me to the special education school for 1st grade, and medicate the hell out of me. I guess this is what happens in a one size fits all learning environment.
Despite all this, I would overcome my limitations. The first thing my mother did was take me off the medication, which was doing me more harm than good.
I then quickly mainstreamed back to the regular classes in math, science,& gym in 1st to 4th grade. I often beat many of the students in math computation competitions.
The combination of my supportive family & teachers, as well as my sheer determination to succeed, caused me to fully mainstream back into the regular classes by 5th grade.
I was still an average student in the classroom with the exception of math & athletics. I always enjoyed playing all the seasonal sports: Baseball, Bowling, Soccer, Floor/Street Hockey, Football, Basketball. I especially loved playing with my friends after school.
I had even more trouble breaking into the starting line-ups in the more organized sports I played. Even though I was better then most, the coaches would often play their favorites usually at the request of the more vocal & influential parents. This simply reinforced the perception that nothing in life ever comes easy for me.
I guess I would consider myself more of a solitary individual preferring to accomplish things on my own instead of working with others. I would prefer to earn money by cutting the grass or delivering newspapers then participating in after school activities like most students. I guess people would consider that pretty anti-social even though I rarely ever missed a day of school.
I breezed through the rest of my school years with average grades, but an overwhelming love of learning. Most of the learning was done outside the typical learning environments.
I graduated reagents with honors despite all that. Since I didn't want to go to college right away, I joined the Navy soon after in July of 1990.
The Navy Years
I'm a Navy Veteran who was stationed onboard the USS Constitution "Old Ironsides" in Boston from July 1990 until July 1994. I gave historical tours of the ship to the public in my 1812 uniform as well as marched in parades along with my other normal Naval duties.
I did plenty of maturing in the Navy. This is when I developed a love for reading & working out. I overcame my fear of public speaking when I gave tours onboard the ship.
I met plenty of wonderful friends & I enjoyed serving my country, but I was too much of a free thinker to become a lifer. In July of 1994, I was honorably discharged from the Navy soon to enter my college years.
My College Years
Soon after I got out of the Navy, I attended college at R.I.T. the following fall as a Biology major. I used the G.I. Bill I invested in when I was in the Navy to help me with my expenses. I also took out some loans, lived with my parents, and worked a part-time J.O.B.
Like my K-12 days, I was an average institutional student. I didn't look forward to getting up early for my classes & often spaced out during most of my lectures. My note taking was mediocre at best and I was never a good test taker. I managed to barely pass most of my science classes within my major.
I did manage to do well in most of the classes outside my major like business, economics, psychology, philosophy. Now that I look back on this, I should of been a business major.
I did manage to graduate four years later with a Bachelor's in Biology, but knew this wasn't my field of expertise.
I considered my college days to be a complete waste of time & money. I retained very little of what I learned and the degree didn't help me get a job despite my best efforts. So I entered into the J.O.B. market to pay of my loans.
My J.O.B. Years
In case you want to know J.O.B. is Just Over Broke and thats what you'll be if you work one.
I continued to work the JOB at 7-11 full-time overnight for about about sixteen more months. I liked working the cooler where I could work on my own, but didn't care for the customer service aspect of the job. I worked in the city and there where many characters out there.
I preferred to work a Job were I can work on my own without the customer service aspect, so I left 7-11 and worked overnights at Wegmans supermarket.
Wegmans was a little bit better, but eventually yielded the same stress and dissatisfaction as my other JOB. I meet some cool people there and partied alot, though I was saying to myself there must be a better way to make income with less stress than this.
My M.L.M Years
In case you're wondering M.L.M means Multi Level Marketing aka Direct Selling or Network Marketing. There are many misconceptions of it, but I think it the most moral form of income generation there is out there. You make as much as you put into it.
I became intrigued by MLM when I picked up the book Rich Dad, Poor Dad and it opened my eyes to how the people made residual multiple streams of income while having the time & energy to do what one is truly passionate about. I found this concept to be very liberating. Everyone should be familiar with the Cash Flow Quadrant.
So I entered into the MLM world in December of 1999, while still working a JOB. I found the MLM world was rewarding, but very challenging for me.
Since I was very shy, I found it very hard to approach & cold call people. I was never comfortable pestering friends & family and contacting people I didn't even know. So of course I struggled and eventually became saddled with debt.
The good thing about MLM is that you meet plenty of wonderful people and the companies especially Nikken actually encourage your personal growth. I started fine tuning my reading to include more personal growth books. So even though I struggled, I was learning from the mistakes I made.
One realization I came to as a result of my reading was that most successful entrepreneurs had little to no formal education. They simply leveraged from the people who did. This same networking concept is what My Space so popular.
I was simply looking for a better way to market my various opportunities, so I joined My Space in August of 2005 and created my group to attract people to my ideas & business. Even though I was on the right track, I still struggled until I found a much better way to market that didn't require me to chase anyone.
In Paul Zane Pilzer's book "The Next Millionaires he states that most of the millionaires will be created on the internet promoting various MLM style companies. So question will be "Will you be apart of this revolution?"
This is where I'm at this moment and this will be my path to financial freedom so that I may have the time, energy, assets to do what really important in life like personal growth, societal progress, and helping other, help themselves.
I wish everyone the best of fortune as they find there true passions in life. Your key to financial freedom starts here. Think & Grow Rich ^__^
