About Me
Born in 1973 in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, bassist Gustavo Amarante began his musical studies at the Fundacao de Educacao Artistica and Fundacao Clovis Salgado. Gustavo started to play professionally accompanying singers at a young age.
Decided to continue his formal studies, Gustavo moved to the United States in 1994, where he attended the Berklee College of Music in Boston. At Berklee, he studied bass, composition and improvisation with renowned teachers such as Oscar Stagnaro, Hal Crook, Ed Tomassi and Whit Browne. Gustavo graduated in 1998 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Professional Music.
In the United States Gustavo has had the opportunity to perform, tour and record with several artists and groups.Gustavo’s credits include performances/recordings with or alongside: Hendrik Meurkens, violinist Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg, singer Machan Taylor, John Scofield, Claudio Roditi, Romero Lubambo, guitarist Aquiles Baez, Latin Grammy nominated artist guitarist Luis Salinas, singer Simon Diaz (Venezuelan living legend), drummer Bob Moses, tango singer Katie Viqueira, pianist Alon Yavnai, vibraphonist Victor Mendoza, Brazilian singer Giana Viscardi, Jovino Santos, saxophonist Carlos Malta (Hermeto Pascoal), pianist Helio Alves, and Bongo Maffin (South African pop sensation band) to name a few.
Major Festivals and Venues include: Nuits D’Afrique (Montreal, Canada) and Reggae on the River Music Festival (California, USA) ; Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts (Washington DC, USA); Lincoln Center (New York, USA); Blue Note (New York, USA); Jazz Standard (New York, USA); Americas Society (New York, USA); Queens Theater in The Park (New York, USA) and Mercury Theater (Chicago, USA); Moods Jazz Club (Zurich, Switzerland), Palais Odeon (Brugg, Switzerland), Bird’s Eye Jazz Club (Basel, Switzerland), Unterfathrt (Munich, Germany), Reigen (Vienna, Austria) and Porgy and Bess Jazz Club (Vienna, Austria).
