Hoboe

The Hoboe with the oboe

About Me

Hoboe is a unique hybrid of musical genres, made possible by the unlikely amplification of an oboe, a “classical” instrument. With the help of sound effects, Hoboe's "train conductor", oboist "Zen Ben" (also known as "Zennifer"), infuses the oboe in a rock setting, bringing in multiple influences--rock, grunge, punk, classic, classical, jazz, psychedelia, glam, mod, electronica and folk. Hoboe's original rock sound transcends genre boundaries."This can be the challenge to booking gigs," says Zen Ben, "many agents try to book bands from the same genre all in one bill--you'll have your metal night, goth night, singer/songwriter night, punk night, or jamband night, etc., etc.--and that's the problem--people say we don't sound like anybody else." Hoboe appreciates booking agents that are willing to take a chance on something new, and Hoboe has shared the stage with bands of various styles.Hoboe is a versatile music project, capable of an edgy hard-rock sound at major rock clubs, an acoustic folk or jazz sound at smaller cafes, or an electronic lounge sound for smaller, up-scale venues.Hoboe's local touring in May and June consists of three shows at lounges and wine bars, so look for a definitively new and unique Hoboe sound at White Heart, Slainte and Blue. Hoboe is also playing some festivals, a benefit concert for curing cancer in June, and rock clubs.Hoboe has been astounding Portland and Boston audiences this year with its unique stage presence and sexy oboe. Audience members are hard-pressed to pinpoint or categorize the Hoboe sound, furthermore challenged by the sometimes drastic changes in style and sound from show to show. Hoboe attempts to make each show in each venue special in its own way.Contact Hoboe to book a performance by clicking Contact on the menu.Rock has new tracks to course as we ride into the 21st century on the oboe train, and Hoboe hopes you will be a part of this great adventure.

Band Members: Hoboe is an interesting hybrid of musical performers, drawing from an expansive reservoir of musical talent to form a unique band for each performance....

Originally formed in Portland, Maine, Hoboe has played numerous shows in the area, but desperately yearns to tour. What Hoboes don't travel? Hoboe is for all intensive performances, considering 2008 its true debut year, playing locally and regionally to build its fan base and exposure. Hoboe intends to record a CD this year, for release in 2009, along with a tour. Labels and managers are welcome to inquire.

A vast underground railroad of over 35 musicians have made appearances with Hoboe, or hitched a ride as guest performers:

A listing can be found at this link:THE UNDERGROUND RAILROAD .

Zen Ben / Zennifer is the bandleader and songwriter for most of Hoboe's original material. (s)He has played oboe with notable national and local acts including former Grateful Dead keyboardist Vince Welnick, Schleigho, Mocha Java, and Boombazi.

Bassist Bob Bergeron, played several times with the "old" Hoboe and has been back again with the "new" Hoboe since late 2007. The man plays bass--he's solid.

Tom Metz just hopped the Hoboe train, and pushes jazz licks to a whole new level of rockability. He cranks.

Eric Lawson plays drums and will be debuting with Hoboe at its next performance at Slainte on May 30th.

The improvisational spirit comes through at live Hoboe shows, and sometimes you can never predict exactly what will happen or where the sound will go.

Influences: Camper Van Beethoven, David Bowie, The Byrds, The Church, The Cure, Dinosaur Jr., The Electric Prunes, The Grateful Dead, Jane's Addiction, Japan, Jethro Tull, Yusef Lateef, Marilyn Manson, The Moody Blues, Nirvana, Pink Floyd, The Pixies, Plasticland, Roxy Music, The Smashing Pumpkins, Sonic Youth, Velvet Underground, Neil Young and Crazy Horse
