The Sandinistas have gained power in Nicaragua, and here in Culver City, California, disco 45's revolve and our Sissy turns twelve. The histories of L.A.'s black, chicano, central american communities; the lives of young gay and transgender folk; the dramas of sibling rivalry, teen pregnancy and progressive politics are played out as Sissy blows out his candles.

CoA is proud to be home to the world premiere of this much-anticipated play. Sissy is the recipient of an Asuncion Finalists Award from Pregones Theater, a Panelist's Choice Award from the Edward Albee Theater Festival, the UC Santa Barbara Latino Playwriting Award from the Center for Chicano Studies and the George Houston Bass Award from Brown University.
Written by award-winning playwright and essayist, Ricardo A. Bracho, and under the skillful direction of CoA Artistic Director, Armando Molina, this is a historic event not to be missed.

RICHARD AZURDIA is a Los Angeles native who has been described as an eccentrically charismatic character actor. He recently co-starred in Lionsgate's critically acclaimed film LADRON QUE ROBA A LADRON, now out on DVD. His range of characters can be seen in the award winning films AMERICA 101, also on DVD, BLACKBERRIES, HUNTING OF MAN, STEREOTYPES & HARD-BITTEN. Other films include KILLERS 2: THE BEAST, DEMON'S KISS & THE DISAPPEARED. His TV credits include Guest Star and Co-Star roles on BBC's mini-series DEEP SPACE, TNT's WANTED, GENERAL HOSPITAL, CHELSEA HANDLER SHOW, NBC's mini-series KINGPIN & ON COMMON GROUND. Also, see him in the recurring role of Davenport in Showtimes's acclaimed WEEDS, season 4, premiering June 16. This year see him Starring in LEGEND OF BAJA & Co-Starring in the sci-fi/thriller GB 2525. He has also worked on many commercial & voice-over spots.
His inherent ability to portray a wide range of characters has led to his involvement in over 40 theatre productions. Most recently in Company of Angels' L.A. VIEWS. Other theatre includes LIVING OUT at the Mark Taper Forum (Directed by award winning director Bill Rauch); East LA Classic Theatre's MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING & CYRANO DE BERGERAC (directed by award winning actor/director Tony Plana); Collage Dance Theatre's THE ENTIRE WORLD IS A NARROW BRIDGE, AFTER EDEN (4 Horton Awards) & SLEEPING WITH THE AMBASSADOR (directed by award winning director Heidi Duckler); LOLA GOES TO ROMA (written/directed by award winning writer Josefina Lopez); John DiFusco's critically acclaimed WALK'N THRU THE FIRE; A national tour of the successful comedy HOW TO LOVE A BLACK MAN and productions for acclaimed theatre companies such as the Son of Semele Ensemble (4 LA Weekly Theater Awards), Watts Village Theater Co., 24th Street Theatre, Sacred Fools Theatre & MET Theatre. For 7 years in a row he played "Diego Rivera" in Grupo De Teatro Sinergia's acclaimed FRIDA KAHLO, which also opened the 1st Annual Latino Intl. Theatre Festival of Los Angeles. He has also performed in East West Players Writer's Gallery Festival, Native Voices' Festival of Plays, Inside the Ford's Latino Play Reading Series, Blank Theatre's living Room Series, Bilingual Foundation of the Arts' New Play Festival and the Edge of the World Theatre Festival.
He's a member of SAG, AFTRA, AEA, LA Stage Alliance, Theater Communications Group & the Advisory Council of the Ford Amphitheatre & [Inside] The Ford.
