John McDermott has been playing drums for about 30 years and has recently returned to his home state of Queensland after several years studying and working in Adelaide. He graduated with a First Class Honours degree in jazz performance in 1997 at the University of Adelaide after being awarded an Honours scholarship and receiving awards for Most Outstanding Undergraduate and Postgraduate. In the same year he was a finalist in two national competitions - runner-up for “Best Up & Coming Drummer†at the Ultimate Drummers weekend in Melbourne and also one of ten finalists at the Wangaratta Jazz Festival.
John has demonstrated his versatility as a musician in a variety of scenarios. He is stylistically fluent in many idioms including rock, pop, funk, R&B, blues, mainstream & contemporary jazz, Latin and world music. As well as being a competent Latin percussionist, John has in recent years, delved into the world of electronic drums and percussion. He has performed, toured and recorded with many Adelaide artists and was a member of such bands as the 10 piece Latin jazz group, Marmalade Circus, organ trio, Hammond Eggs and cabaret band, Lucifers Lounge.
Being an accomplished sight-reader, John has had extensive experience with big bands and in 1998 toured the U.S. with jazz choir, the Adelaide Connection (their most notable performance at the I.A.J.E. convention in New York) John was also invited to perform with The Adelaide Symphony Orchestra’s “Symphony Under the Stars†at the 2004 Adelaide Festival featuring the epic works, "West Side Story - Symphonic Dances" and Ellington's "Harlem", and is a regular member of the “Carols by Candlelight†orchestra. John has appeared at many jazz festivals including a Marmalade Circus performance for "Jazz in the Domain" at the Sydney Festival to an estimated crowd of 80,000.
He has played with an impressive number of Australian and international artists such as James Morrison, James Muller, Todd McKenney, Marina Prior, Goose, Lillian Boutte, Ann Hampton-Calloway, Grace Knight, Rachael Beck, John St. Peeters, Rhonda Burchmore, Peter Cupples & Jon English to name a few and was recently asked to provide the drum track for the short animated film “Sweet and Sour†premiering at the 2007 Adelaide Film Festival.
John is also available for private tuition. He has had over 15 years experience as an educator having lectured at the University of Adelaide and taught at several prestigious South Australian schools. He specializes in a wide variety of styles and has adapted a unique approach to teaching rhythm, co-ordination and musicianship, and understands the importance of nurturing talent and creativity.
