I'm the author of six bestselling novels: Scenes From A Sistah , Getting To The Good Part , Blind Ambitions , Child of God , Tastes Like Chicken , and Sex.Lies.Murder.Fame. I've contributed short stories to three anthologies: Black Silk , Twilight Moods , and Brown Sugar 3: When Opposites Attract . I also have a novella entitled "Three For The Road" that's part of a three-novella anthology featuring Connie Briscoe , Anita Bunkley , and me called You Only Get Better .
I am also developing projects for television, film, and stage. I love cooking, travel, all kinds of music, as long as it speaks to me (and a lot of stuff speaks to me), film, TV, dogs (the actual animals, not the personality type), and SHOES. I'm originally a South Florida native who's also lived in Orlando, Montgomery (Alabama), NYC, and was a Cali girl for eight years ("West Siiiiiiiiiiiide!!!"), but now I'm in the Midwest, and I heard it gets reallllllllly cold here. Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow!!!
I'm also a graduate of the University of Florida .
"Gooooooooooo Gators!!!"
Be sure to check out my novel, Sex.Lies.Murder.Fame.
The film rights were recently optioned by Entertainment Studios . When it was first released, my publisher, Amistad/HarperCollins , shot a film trailer for it, and was the first to do so to promote a book. USA Today even did a write-up about it (click the words " USA Today " in this sentence to read it). The trailer is a mini-movie that gives you a peek into what goes on in the novel. Check it out:

We also have a soundtrack that's chockful of goodies. Produced by the PHENOMENAL Al "Butter" McLean of Cedar Park Entertainment , the cd has a hot mix of pop, R&B, and hip-hop, including the Scott Storch -produced killer lead single, I Like My Man Hard , by the spectacular Silena Murrell .
The soundtrack also features two audio excerpts, read by the very delicious actor (and my good friend), Mel Jackson .
Also check out my novel, Child of God ...
...which has been optioned for film by rap superstar, Kanye West .

I'd like to meet:

I like animated people with positive energy, a positive outlook and, preferably, something to say.

Speaking of animated, ain't my dawgies the cutest things ever????

My Vibe Right Now...

Music:

Everything. Except Polka. Alright, if it's really banging Polka, bring it on!!!

Movies:

Anything by Kubrick (except "Eyes Wide Shit Shut"), Scorsese, Coppola (especially Godfathers I & II), Tarantino, Hitchcock, Ingmar Bergman, Michael Mann (except for that extraordinary piece of garbage that broke my heart, "Miami Vice"), Ridley Scott ("American Gangster" is the shizz), Woody Allen's body of work from the seventies to the mid-eighties (and his amazing recent film, "Match Point"), Spike Lee's joints (love me some Spike), Spielberg, John Singleton, Carl Franklin, George Lucas, Forest Whitaker (behind the lens and in front), Lee Daniels, anything with Will Smith, Denzel (did I mention how much I love "American Gangster"?), Christian Bale, anything written by Charlie Kaufman, old black-and-white flicks with Bette Davis, Barbara Stanwyck, Joan Crawford, Lena Horne, Joan Fontaine, John Garfield, Cary Grant, Sammy Davis, Jr., Vivien Leigh, Edward G. Robinson, anything noir (love film noir)...I don't know. I watch A LOT of movies. I am a film buff in the best and worst way. I couldn't even begin to cover the ground of what I like and do it sufficient justice. I am the same way about film and television as I am about books and music---passionate and voracious.

Television:

Hmmm. Okay, let me see. The Wire, The Boondocks, Nip/Tuck, BET's American Gangster series (love, love, love it), The Sopranos (yeah, I know the series ended, but syndication is FOREVER), Oprah (I'm a girl, I can't help it, it's one of those moth/flame kind of things), David Letterman, Conan O'Brien, The Daily Show, Mad Men, Burn Notice, MadTV, Jimmy Kimmel, Rome, lots and lots of cable news programming, The Food Network (yeah...the whole damn network), American Idol (I know, I know), 24, Tell Me You Love Me, Prison Break, whatever's playing on Turner Classic Movies, SNL (when it doesn't suck, which is becoming rarer by the moment), Big Love, The 4400, House, and assorted other mind rot. Too much to mention. Don't make me do this.

Books:

A Man In Full (Tom Wolfe), Crime and Punishment (Fyodor Dostoyevsky), Song of Solomon (Toni Morrison), Madame Bovary (Gustave Flaubert), Sister Carrie (Theodore Dreiser), Drop (Mat Johnson), Their Eyes Were Watching God (Zora Neale Hurston), any of the works of Aristophanes, Aeschylus, Sophocles, Euripides, and Shakespeare...uhhhhhh, a buncha stuff. I'm an author. I've been influenced and impacted by generations of writers, as well as decades of film, television, and music. It all fuses together in my work. I'm a pop culture baby with strong literary influences.

Heroes:

Shakespeare, Toni Morrison, Dr. Joseph Marshall Jr., Mary Pittman-Jones, Renee Stone, Debby Ryan.
