The Cannabis Awareness Project's MySpace page and it's links contain information regarding cannabis (marijuana, hash, weed, pot or whatever you want to call it). Controversial subjects that may be discussed include the argument regarding the legalization of marijuana and all of its forms, the recreational use of cannabis, extradition, cannabis cultivation, cannabis laws, drug humor, drug tests, legal highs, pictures of cannabis, medical uses for cannabis and the devastating unnecessary impact created on society due to cannabis prohibition. All content displayed on this site is for educational and entertainment purposes only!
As the Founder of The Cannabis Awareness Project, I want you to know that I will always support "FREE SPEECH" however, posts with personal attacks will not be tolerated and will be removed. **NO I don't know where you can get any pot and NO I don't grow it and NO I don't sell it. So don't ask.
Now, If cannabis were unknown, and Bio-Prospectors were suddenly to find cannabis in some remote mountain crevice, it's discovery would no doubt be hailed as a medical breakthrough.
Scientists would praise it's potential for treating everything from pain to cancer, and marvel at it's rich pharmacopoeia ~ many of whose chemicals mimic vital molecules in the human body. In reality, cannabis has been with humanity for thousands of years and is considered by many governments (notably America’s) to be a dangerous drug without utility.
Any suggestion that the plant might be medically useful is politically controversial, whatever the science says. It is in this context that, on April 20th, America’s Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a statement saying that smoked marijuana has no accepted medical use in treatment in the United States. The statement is curious in a number of ways. For one thing, it overlooks a report made in 1999 by the Institute of Medicine (IOM), part of the National Academy of Sciences, which came to a different conclusion.
John Benson, a professor of medicine at the University of Nebraska who co-chaired the committee that drew up the report, found some sound scientific information that supports the medical use of marijuana for certain patients for short periods—even for smoked marijuana.
I believe in my heart that there are more kids today actually doing more Prescription Drugs than there are smoking Marijuana. I also believe we must eliminate the stereotypes associated with cannabis and spread the truth to all those who will listen
We must start educating our children now, so that they can realize at an early age; that the war on drugs was just hype. Remember people, knowledge is power! Never lie to your children, talk to them like an adult and if they ask questions; answer them truthfully. They will be more the wiser and intelligent to the real world that surrounds them. Just think about it! The children are the future! Is it really that easy?
Also, what about the future of Ownership and Patenting of Nature? Because if cannabis is legalized, we will need to protect it from GMO patenting.
Does the Government have the Jurisdiction to outlaw plants anyway? We need to end Prohibition Now! We must educate ourselves! We all must find out why it is bad to have a War on drugs! We all must know why it is way too expensive to have a War on Drugs!
The world needs cannabis for medicinal purposes. Since 1996, twelve states have legalized medical marijuana use: AK, CA, CO, HI, ME, MT, NV, NM, OR, RI, VT and WA. New Mexico's legislation was signed into law by Governor Bill Richardson on April 2, 2007. The new law takes effect on July 1, 2007; mandates the State Department of Health, by October 1, 2007, promulgate rules governing the use and distribution of medical cannabis to state-authorized patients. These rules shall address the creation of state-licensed "cannabis production facilities," the development of a confidential patient registry and a state-authorized marijuana distribution system, and "define the amount of cannabis that is necessary to constitute an adequate supply" for qualified patients.
Prohibition has failed -- again. Instead of treating the demand for illegal drugs as a market, and addicts as patients, policymakers the world over have boosted the profits of drug lords and fostered narcostates that would frighten Al Capone. Finally, a smarter drug control regime that values reality over rhetoric is rising to replace the "war" on drugs.
FACTS ~ * One in three young Black men in the U.S. is under criminal justice control
* 683,200 Black males are behind bars, compared with 674,4000 White males
* It takes 5 grams of crack to get five years in federal prison, versus 500 grams of powder cocaine
* 94% of 3,430 crack defendants in federal courts in 1994 were Black
* AIDS is now the leading cause of death for Black men ages 25-44
* Marijuana, cocaine and heroin abuse result in about 10,000 American deaths per year
* Secondhand cigarette smoke kills an estimated 70,000 Americans each year
* Alcohol abuse results in an estimated 100,000 American deaths each year
* Tobacco-related illnesses cause approximately 500,000 American deaths each year
Working together, we can find ways to eliminate drug-related crime, violence and corruption. We can reduce drug use by children. We can decrease drug-related disease and death. We can live side by side as brothers, rather than living as oppressor and oppressed. The drug war has destroyed the lives of too many Americans. It's time for peace.
The Tobacco Industry has consistently acted in ways which have recklessly ignored the public health while pretending that it is being responsible... Nicotine addiction is the most common serious medical problem in the U.S. Sixty million Americans aged 12 and above, including 4 million aged 12-17, used cigarettes in the past month (1994 figures). Among those who continue to smoke, half will die because of smoking. Most who use tobacco products are regularly addicted to nicotine.
Worldwide, more than one billion people smoke cigarettes and three million will die in 1996 alone from the cigarette. Unless effective control measures are put in place, the worldwide death toll will reach 10 million per year in thirty years.
Is it time for Americans to reconsider how they teach kids about alcohol? Peele's father is at the top of the list. "We taught them to drink in a civilized fashion, like a civilized human being," says Stanton Peele, psychologist and author of "Addiction-Proof Your Child."
He says many of the programs set up to stop alcohol abuse contribute to the teen binge-drinking crisis. Any program that tells kids flatly not to drink creates temptation, he says. "Preparing your child to drink at home lessens the likelihood that they are going to binge drink," he says. "Not sharing alcohol with your child is a risk factor for binge drinking."
Peele says other cultures have figured it out. He points to Italy, Greece and Israel, where children are given small amounts of wine at religious celebrations or watered-down alcohol on special occasions.
We Must End the War on Drugs! Prohibition of drugs began in 1915. The experiment has been going on for 80 years now, and by every rational test it is a ghastly failure.
The huge amounts of money spent in recent years on the drug war have not reduced addiction. Per capita use of cocaine has in fact increased.
And the effort to stop drug use by harsher and harsher criminal penalties has had devastating side effects. It has made importation and distribution of the forbidden products immensely profitable. That in turn has lured large numbers of Black men, even children, into the drug trade.
"We're giving these kids a criminal identity," Joseph D. McNamara, former police chief in San Jose, California, said, "when we should be trying to find every possible way to keep them in school and get them into employment."
McNamara is now a research fellow at the Hoover Institution in Stanford, California. Last May, Hoover put on a conference about drug policy. The participants included George Shultz, the former secretary of state, and Milton Friedman, the economist -- both also at the Hoover Institution -- and dozens of police officials. The participants ended by favoring, overwhelmingly, medical and educational alternatives to the war on drugs.
"Any objective group that studies the war on drugs has to recognize that it's a disaster," McNamara told the Palo Alto Weekly. "It is not stopping the spread of drug abuse, it's causing a good deal more crime and violence than we'd otherwise have, and it's having severe negative effects on race relations in America."
Another terrible cost of the drug war is the incarceration of enormous numbers of people. This country now has more than one million prisoners, many of them sentenced to long terms for nonviolent drug crimes. It costs upward of $20,000 a year for each one -- and it will cost hundreds of billions to build new prisons.
The racial impact of the drug war is particularly devastating. One third of this country's Black men between 20 and 29 are now in prison or under supervision of the criminal justice system, most of them for drug crimes.
Then there is the murderous quality of life in urban ghettos. Guns accompany the drug trade, and small children are incidental victims of the street battles that result. By one estimate, we have 10,000 drug-related homicides a year.
If we began to decriminalize our drug laws, there might be an increase, perhaps temporary, in casual use. But against that possibility one has to weigh the great gains for society in taking the profits out of the drug trade.
That is one point made in a compelling piece on drugs in the October issue of the Washington Monthly. By Joshua Wolf Shenk, it argues that we must try to limit drug use -- but not use methods that do more harm than good.
Cigarettes have been found to addict young users more than any other drug. Shenk points out, and 434,000 Americans die prematurely each year because of tobacco use. But we fight that problem not by criminal prohibition but by rules and education, which have substantially reduced smoking.
Politically, it is very hard to talk sense about drugs. President Clinton has just signed legislation rejecting a recommendation of the federal Sentencing Commission to end the grotesque disparity of sentences for crack and regular cocaine: up to 100 times more for the former.
But some day we may have political leaders brave enough to do what most of the police authorities and judges who are on the front line have concluded is essential:
STOP THE SELF-DESTRUCTION OF THE WAR ON DRUGS.

Law Enforcement Against Prohibition -
Founded on March 16, 2002, LEAP is made up of current and former members of the law enforcement and criminal justice communities who are speaking out about the failures of our existing drug policies. Those policies have failed, and continue to fail, to effectively address the problems of drug abuse, especially the problems of juvenile drug use, the problems of addiction, and the problems of crime caused by the existence of a criminal black market in drugs.
Although those who speak publicly for LEAP are people from the law enforcement and criminal justice communities, a large number of our supporting members do not have such experience. You don't have to have law enforcement experience to join us.
By continuing to fight the so-called "War on Drugs", the US government has worsened these problems of society instead of alleviating them. A system of regulation and control of these substances (by the government, replacing the current system of control by the black market) would be a less harmful, less costly, more ethical and more effective public policy.
