About Me

Some Best Friend emerged in the Summer of 2004 with a self-produced EP that paved the way for songwriter Ed Ling to start writing songs he really believed in. These early recordings were passed around, gained positive reviews and caused minor ripples - but more importantly they provided the blueprint for a new direction...

Think the Beach Boys meeting the grey English melancholy of Nick Drake and the Doves, The Stone Roses' melodicism tinged with the 80's pop sensibilities of Echo and the Bunnymen and The Smiths. Then channel it all through the DIY ethic of Badly Drawn Boy and you're nearly there.

Here are songs that exist in their own strangely familiar world - somewhere between dark and light, happy and sad.

Sounds Like: "'Magnetic Fields was mellow yeah BUT its arrangement and production blew me away, it was a nice retreat from sometime 100 mph Britpop that we cover here, the stand out tune however was 'Island' this is where we really get to hear some of the most thoughtful songwriting and the most charming vocals, Ed Ling not only sings on these tunes, he plays everything you can imagine, talent indeed."
- sohostrut.co.uk"The glacial sounds of the Bunnymen, the rich textures of Wah! and the bombast of the Teardrops, that's what I hear from Some Best Friend. And these are still bedroom demos, The new wall of sound is coming!"
- Jake Shillingford, My Life Story"The melancholic air of the Doves meets the Icicle Works"
- John Earls, Planet Sound

"You could write for days about this guy. Such a talent, he draws you in with his emotional lyrics. With total precision, a moving performance stirs visions of Cat Stevens and Badly Drawn Boy very easy to listen to."
