ST. VINCENT SUPERSOUND LATINAIRES ORCHESTRA -- THE MIGHTY TOM CATS -- OCHO -- NAIROBI AFRO BAND -- C.K. MANN ("In 1973 highlife music was in trouble. The old-school were being pushed out the door by cheap disco and funk music from Nigeria and the States. Lucky for us a group of young highlife believers refused to let it die. Some started trying new forms of guitar-heavy highlife, dropping the horns and slow-dance rhythms of old in favour of a faster, harder music. Others created new forms of highlife-funk fusion. It was almost afrobeat, but still highlife. A new funky twist on a great sound. One of these funk stars is Charles Kofi Amankwaa Mann (C.K. Mann) from Ghana. He took the traditional Ghanaian osode highlife beat and remixed it for the new generation. Add some whriling organ, fat bass lines and highlife harmonies and you get some seriously cool new music. C.K., as he’s known in Ghana, is a self-taught guitarist and ex-sailor. He got his break playing for Kakaiku’s Guitar Band in the 60s. Once he established himself he started his own band, The Carousel 7. They had a mega-hit in ‘69, 'Edina Brenya', which propelled C.K. into stardom. It’s around this time that C.K. began to develop his new osode sound and incorporate disco and funk into highlife.") -- JESSE ANDERSON ("As recorded by The Impressions in 1969, Curtis Mayfield’s 'Mighty Mighty (Spade and Whitey)' was a party song that gave blacks and whites a rare chance to celebrate empowerment together. The following year, this raw instrumental version appeared on the B-side to the minor soul hit 'I Got A Problem' (on the Thomas label) by a singer who had previously recorded for Cadet.") -- SPANKY WILSON -- FRANK WILSON -- LEE MOSES -- THE FLIRTATIONS GONN (myspace.com/gonn66) -- THE LYNDELLS (myspace.com/thelyndells) -- BABY GRANDMOTHERS ("Baby Grandmothers were a short-lived Swedish band, but one of the most prolific and unique psychedelic, modal, experimental power-trios to emerge out of the Scandinavian psychedelic underground-scene in 1967. Although hailing from Stockholm, Sweden they only released a single in Finland, which has since become one of the most sought after pieces of vinyl from the era. Baby Grandmothers were formed out of the legendary R&B/beat band T-Boones in the summer of 1967. T-Boones are probably best known for their 'At The Club'/'King of the Orient' single which is one of the best, and most collectable, out of the Swedish garage beat-era. Guitar-wiz Kenny Håkansson joined the band in 1965 and with the group down to a trio they drifted into the psychedelic sounds of the time and in August 1967 released the single 'I Want You', which definitely was the first hard-rock recording ever made in Sweden. The band was then re-christened Baby Grandmothers by the co-founder of the newly opened psychedelic club Filips, for which he needed a house-band. Filips was the legendary breeding ground for bands such as Hansson & Karlsson, Pärson Sound, as well as orgiastic all night jams with foreign luminaries such as Jimi Hendrix and the Mothers of Invention. Baby Grandmothers also supported Jimi Henrix on his Swedish tour in 1968 and then turned into Mecki Mark Men, who became the first Swedish rock band to tour the US. Founding member Kenny Håkansson went on to form the highly influential Kebnekajse, who created the Swedish electric folk psych sound.") Word has it that lead singer AC Tolbert was the son of a roving preacher. As a young man he sang in the choir at churches where his father would preach. Somewhere along the line AC dropped his goodie-two shoes pretentions and started making songs like 'Give Me Another Joint', the first tune on the first side of the super obscure Damn Sam The Miracle Man album. This pre-disco psychadelic funk bomb touches down somewhere near the rockier side of Sly Stone, close to the more uptempo tunes of the mid-70s's Meters and lands damn close to the funky fusion sounds of The Turner Bros or the Mighty Ryeders. Recorded in Detroit it's a bizarre album blending funk, rock, soul, rhythm and blues, and jazz together in one big studio jam session. 'Smash' is a heavy groover that builds until the band relent to give the drummer some, he obliges gradually being accompanied by wah wah guitar and percussion - time to bust out the MPC!") -- ED BLAND ("Bland's command of jazz allowed him to make a living in the record industry as a composer, arranger, and producer of urban-generated forms of Black music, such as Soul, Rhythm and Blues, Jazz, Funk, Rock & Roll, and Urban Blues. The first fruit of their collaboration with Ed Bland was the single 'Skunk Juice' and 'Toe Jam' that defines the distinctive sound of the Pazant Brothers: a tight, syncopated groove") -- SOUL SEARCHERS -- SAPO -- SUN RA ("In 1966, a toy company in Newark, New Jersey released a children's record called 'Batman and Robin' to cash in on the popular Adam West TV series of the same name. The music on the LP was credited to 'The Sensational Guitars of Dan and Dale', but in fact the band was one of the greatest uncredited session combos of all time, including the core of Sun Ra's Arkestra and Al Kooper's Blues Project. To keep the music licensing fees to a minimum, all the tracks were based on public domain items like Chopin's Polonaise Op. 53, the horn theme from Tchaikovsky's Fifth Symphony and the love theme from Romeo and Juliet, and generic rock riffs. It's all instrumental, with the exception of 'Robin's Theme', featuring an uncredited vocalist.") (myspace.com/soundofjoy) -- STARK REALITY ("Two years ago, burrowed inside his Phoenix apartment with a collection of vintage synths and keyboards, jazz musician Monty Starks had no idea that his 30-year-old renditions of children's songs by Hoagy Carmichael were among the most coveted pieces of vinyl for hip-hop's reigning elite. In the past few years legendary producers such as Madlib, Large Professor, and Pete Rock have sampled his funky, psych-jazz reinterpretations of one of America's most prized songwriters, and the original pressing of his album has achieved a mythical status among record collectors, fetching in excess of $500 on the crate-digging circuit. But now the secret's out. Thanks in large part to the dutiful archivists at Stones Throw Records, which has a history of rereleasing such early-'70s obscurities as the critically acclaimed 'Funky 16 Corners' compilation, the public now has access to one of the industry's most well-guarded treasures. Spanning five decades, at least three disparate music forms, and ever changing cultural milieus, the continued relevance of Carmichael's children's songs is a testament not only to the archivist nature of sample-based hip-hop, but also of the adaptability of the composer-actor's compositions. In 1958, Carmichael – best known for such classic jazz compositions as 'Star Dust', 'Heart and Soul', and 'Georgia (on My Mind)' – recorded 'Hoagy Carmichael's Havin' a Party' (Golden Records), an album of original children's compositions. The songs retained the whimsical jazz inflections of his earlier work while appropriating the gleeful tones of childhood. As with nearly all of the songwriter's projects, the album was well received and readily accepted into the Carmichael canon. Unfortunately, the '60s unfolded and his music was swept beneath the cultural undertow of rock. No one denied that Carmichael was a national treasure, but in light of the Vietnam War and the era's cultural revolution, his music sounded like a relic of a more sentimental time.") 'Lost My Soul' opens the release with soft, clipped beats and warm pads backing the soft vocals. Aching strings enter the mix and build during the soft crescendo choruses and push the track upward in a gentle arc. 'Sparks In The Snow' bumps up the BPM a little bit and brings some spectral organ in alongside fuzzy washes of guitar and synths for another great mixture.") Genius.") (myspace.com/glasvegas) THE NEBYUDELIC SOUND SYSTEM (myspace.com/nebyudelic) -- BABY HUEY ("James Ramey moved to Chicago, Illinois at the age of nineteen, and worked with several local bands as a singer. Due to a glandular disorder, Ramey was a large man, weighing about 350 pounds (180 kg). His size contributed to his stage presence, but also to health problems. Nevertheless, he made light of his condition, adopting the stage name 'Baby Huey' after Paramount Pictures' giant duckling cartoon character of the same name. In 1963, Ramey, organist/trumpetist Melvin 'Deacon' Jones, and guitarist Johnny Ross founded a band called Baby Huey & the Babysitters, which became a popular local act and released several singles, including 'Beg Me', 'Monkey Man', 'Messin' with the Kid' and 'Just Being Careful'... During the late-1960s, the band followed the lead of Sly & the Family Stone and became a psychedelic soul act. Huey began wearing an Afro and donned psychedelic African-inspired robes, and adding sing-song, self-referential rhymes to his live performances. According to his bandmates, Ramey's rhymes were very similar in style to those later popularized by rappers in hip-hop music. The Babysitters were a popular live act, but never took the time out to record an album. In 1969, the band's agent Marv Heiman secured them an audition with Curtom Records arranger Donny Hathaway. Hathaway was impressed by the act, and got Curtom Records head Curtis Mayfield to sign Baby Huey, but not the band. Although the band participated in the recording of Ramey's debut album, there were feelings of unease among them, and Ross and Jones quit the band during the recording sessions. By 1970, Ramey had developed an addiction to heroin, and his weight had increased to over 400 pounds. He began regularly missing gigs or turning up late, and, at the insistence of his bandmates, briefly entered rehabilitation in the spring of 1970. James Ramey died of a heart attack on October 28, 1970, at the age of 26... Baby Huey & the Babysitters' album, 'The Baby Huey Story: The Living Legend', was released after the death of their lead singer. Produced by Curtis Mayfield, the album featured several Mayfield compositions, as well as a cover of Sam Cooke's 'A Change Is Gonna Come' and two original compositions by Ramey. The album did not sell well upon its original release, and was largely forgotten by the mainstream. Today it is considered a classic. Several songs from The Baby Huey Story, including 'Hard Times', 'Listen to Me', and 'Mighty Mighty Children', have been frequently sampled by hip hop producers since the 1980s. 'Hard Times' alone has been sampled by dozens of artists, including Ice Cube ('The Birth'), A Tribe Called Quest ('Can I Kick It?'), Ghostface Killah ('Buck 50'), and others. Many people, including the Babysitters themselves, see The Baby Huey Story as a significant and important influence on hip hop music. The group was formed in 1965 with Dave Bingham (lead vocals, harmonica), Glynn Bell (rhythm guitar), Rodger Mayne (lead guitar), John Read (bass), and Robin Boers (drums). In their early beginings their music was partialy influenced by The Who and The Yardbirds, however the band was still able to create a rough individual sound typified by their solid garage-punk material and raw delivery. The Ugly Ducklings recordings have since been featured on several 60's garage rock compilation CDs including the 'Garage Beat 66' and 'Nuggets' series, along with a rare live version of 'I'm A Man' (recorded in the band's spacious rehearsal hall in Scarborough, Ontario) released by Sundazed Records in 2004. They signed to Capitol Records in 1967 and released their only Billboard Top 40 hit, 'Nobody but Me' (first recorded by the Isley Brothers, who wrote it). 'Nobody' peaked at #8 in January 1968. An album, 'Evolutions', followed. The Beinz' next single, 'Turn On Your Love Light', flopped in the US (peaking at #80) but shot to #1 (for six weeks) in Japan and a tour followed. 'Turn On Your Love Light' (a hit for Bobby Bland in 1962, and later covered by several artists, including Jerry Lee Lewis) featured 'It's Fun To Be Clean', a snappy tune reminiscent of the Beatles' 'Penny Lane', as the B-side. Shortly thereafter, they changed their name to The Open Mind and in 1969 released a self-titled LP which has since become a highly sought-after collectible. The band, however, is best known for its druggy 1969 single 'Magic Potion', which did not appear on the album. Jon Anderson briefly sang in the band but left to form Yes. The Open Mind disbanded in 1973; its members wanted to move into jazz-influenced music, but The Open Mind was too well-known as a psychedelic band. The band members (minus Phil Fox) went on to form Armada, which lasted about three years but did not release any recorded material. Bain was then joined in the new outfit by his former bandmate, drummer Sterling Roswell (aka Rosco). Vocals were initially handled by Nick Hayden but his departure forced Bain to assume them. The group were signed to Beggars Banquet Records offshoot Situation Two throughout their existence. The group debuted in 1990 with the single 'Highrise Love' and this was followed by an LP, 'All That Noise'. With Rosco moving to keyboards, the group recruited Craig Wagstaff, whom they had known while in Spacemen 3. The 'Melomania' LP then followed in 1992. With the departure of guitarist Kevin Cowan following the LP's release, Bain then assumed guitar duties for the EP 'Mayhem to Meditate'. When Situation Two rejected the demos cut for a third LP, the band disintegrated. Like a less sublime, more groovy, danceable Spiritualized, the band merges spacey riffs with urban samples and mechanical drumbeats. This formula works best on more structured numbers like the droney, melodic 'Destiny Angel', the upbeat 'Transfixed' (which adds maracas to the phased music) and the funky 'Farmer C'. They spent three months recording 'Entrance High Rise', with the intent to re-record the material after attracting a label with what they had. By the fifties, sizeable migrations from rural to urban areas had created a culture of disaffection, and arabesk music was its soundtrack. By the end of the sixties, it had gained widespread popularity in the peripheries of the more prosperous cities of Turkey as it related issues of national identity that Atatürk’s reforms had left unaddressed and inadvertently had amplified in its accelerated drive towards modernising Turkey into a potential Western-styled power. Arabesk was a reaction to this abrupt cultural alignment with the West, and it described a social reality of the migrant folk who felt like outsiders in their own land as nostalgia, fatalism, frustration and resentment all took form in arabesk music alongside recurrent themes of city alienation. This expressionist Turkish reggae/punk/film noir-all-at-once art form would gain its widest recognition during the mid-sixties through the exotic records of Orhan Gencebay. In 1972 Karaca joined the group Mogollar (Mongols) and wrote his masterpiece 'Namus Belasi'. However, Cahit Berkay, the leader of Mogollar, wanted an international name for his band, and he left for France to take the group to an another level. Karaca, who wanted to continue his Anatolian beat sound, left Mogollar and started his own band Dervisan (Dervishan or Dervishs). Karaca and Dervisan sang poetic and progressive songs. He was left from Mogollar and founded Dervisan (Dervishes) group in 1974. In the 70's Turkey's image was getting destroyed by civil war. As the country fell into chaos, Cem Karaca started to get the attention of the government. At times he was accused of treason for being a separatist thinker, Marxist, and Leninist, and the Turkish government tried to portray Karaca as a man who is unknowingly writing songs to start a revolution. One politician said "Karaca is simply calling citizens to a bloody war against the state.", so that Dervisan was dissolved in end of 1977. Later that same year the press wrote about Friends young drummer, 12-year-old Thomas Skogsberg, who was not allowed by the authorities to play drums after 8 o’clock in the evening. It was considered too strenuous for a 12-year-old boy to work so late! There was a certain amount of discussion within the band during the production of the album, which shows in the large number of tracks included. In the meantime, things were changing in the local garage landscape, in the wake of the disbandment of the great Crimson Shadows. Crimson's fallout gave birth to two bands that were integrating elements of British and Dutch r'n'b - the raw, basement kind you'd find on 'Pebbles vol 6' and 'Transworld Punk' - into the American teen sounds; the Highspeed V and the Wylde Mammoths. The Stomachmouths did acknowledge this expanded vision with a new track called 'R'n'b no 65', an obvious nod to Holland's great Q65. Apart from this the 'Something Weird' LP, released by Got To Hurry in the Spring 1986, stayed true to the Stomach credo of garage, surf and good clean teenage fun. They rubbed shoulders with the cream of the Motor City, including Funkadelic, the Temptations, Edwin Starr, Bob Seger and the MC5. They recorded for the legendary Chess Records. And they picked up the torch of Jimi Hendrix to pioneer a distinctive breed of African-American psychedelia. Yet Detroit's Black Merda was history after just four years, a victim of record-industry vicissitudes and destined for cultdom. 'We were slightly arrogant', Merda bassist VC Veasey says now, somewhat ruefully, of his group's brief tenure. 'We thought we were doing something groundbreaking and meaningful-we put ourselves in the same category as Hendrix and the Beatles-but we were young guys and we made some bad business decisions'. Along their way, though, Black Merda made some bold artistic decisions. As in-demand session players in early-'60s Detroit, Veasey, drummer Tyrone Hite and guitarist Anthony Hawkins, then known as the Soul Agents, were touring with both Edwin Starr and Gene 'Duke Of Earl' Chandler by 1967. On the road with Chandler, one day the men wandered into a record store and came across Jimi Hendrix's 'Are You Experienced?'. 'We didn't stop playing it for a month!' Veasey marvels. 'Hendrix turned us around, and we decided we wanted to emulate him, as far as that kind of dress, the attitude. We felt we had a spiritual kindred'. Soon afterward the Soul Agents adopted a decidedly Hendrixian fashion sense: towering Afros and flamboyant attire-Veasey claims they were doing 'the freaked-out thing' when Funkadelic was still wearing matching suits. Dubbing their sonic style 'black rock', adding Hawkins' younger brother Charles on second guitar and christening themselves Black Merda (after a brief stint as the somewhat inflammatory 'Black Murder'), the group quickly notched a local reputation as a take-no-prisoners live act. Motown producer Norman Whitfield and the Temptations' Eddie Kendricks courted the quartet, but Merda resisted such overtures, stubbornly taking the attitude that, as Veasey puts it, 'the 'old Motown thing' was passe'. In 1969, at the urging of songwriter Ellington 'Fugi' Jordan (who penned Etta James' hit 'I'd Rather Go Blind'), producer and Chess label boss Marshall Chess came to town to check out Black Merda. Thrilled to sign with the same label that had recently unleashed Muddy Waters' rock side on Electric Mud, Merda soon began work on its debut, additionally backing up Fugi on a proposed solo album for Chess. 1970's Black Merda was a heady melange of psychedelic funk, hard rock and dirty-ass chain-gang blues-Funkadelic meets MC5. Yet lost in the translation from microphone to mixdown was the group's big, visceral live sound. 'With the album we wanted that', Veasey says. 'But [the producer] toned it down. He took all the dynamics out of it'. Disheartened and unwilling to tour behind an inferior product, Merda decamped to California with Fugi, who had West Coast contacts and was now playing congas in the band. They soon became friendly with the members of L.A.'s War and entertained an offer to sign with the group's production company. Chess, however, wanted a second album, and Merda soon returned home. 1972's resulting Long Burn the Fire, with its mix of rockers and strings-laden ballads, wasn't as edgy as its predecessor, but it could've been a contender if not for two missteps: Confusingly, the group changed its name, to just 'Mer-Da', and Chess, having recently been sold, shifted the project to low-priority status and issued the LP on its Janus subsidiary. With no label support and-with disco on the horizon-consumers' tastes changing, the Merda flame gradually flickered and dimmed. 'We just kind of stopped because we felt there was no place for us and the kind of music we were doing', Veasey explains. '[But] Black Merda had some magic going. Like many Jamaican singers, Lewis got his start at Studio One, but soon moved over to Ken Khouri's Federal Studios, where he recorded what is arguably the first rocksteady side, 'Take It Easy', backed by Lynn Taitt & the Jets. The song was released on Winston Blake's Merritone label in 1966 and was a huge success. In the late '60s he worked as part of a duo with Glen Brown. His solo career really took off when he won the 1970 Festival Song Competition with the song 'Boom Shacka Lacka', which he recorded for Duke Reid's Treasure Isle label, then moved over to Byron Lee's Dynamic Sound imprint for the album 'Groovin' Out on Life', which firmly established Lewis as an explosive singer and performer when it was released in 1973, followed quickly by a second album, 'The Dynamic Hopeton Lewis'. Lewis started his own label, Bay City Music, in the late '80s and turned increasingly to gospel music, releasing 'This Is Gospel' in 1996, followed by 'Reaching Out to Jesus' in 2000.
