Born in 1965 in Germany Wolfgang Maiwald began playing the piano at the age of fourteen as an autodidact. He starts writing his own songs and plays in local bands. 1984 he studies music at the University of Oldenburg. Together with two other musicians he founds a recording studio in 1987 under the name InMusic where he records his first maxi single with the funk band RED. In 1989 he wins first price for best solo artist and best trio at the jazz contest “Jugend Jazzt Niedersachsenâ€.
In 1990 Wolfgang moves to Holland to study jazz piano at the Amsterdam School Of Arts, Hilversum Conservatory. His teachers were Henk Elkerbout and Rob Madna. He graduates “cum laude†for both teaching and performing in 1995. Ever-since Wolfgang is playing performances and concerts in different styles and formations in the Netherlands and abroad. For the last four and a half years he lead a weekly jazz concert and jam session with his jazz trio at the hotel/cafe “The Old Quarter†in the center of Amsterdam. Together with the guitar Player Florian Hierdeis he formes the Maiwald/Hierdeis Duo. Right now Wolfgang is preparing to record his first album under his own name.
But Wolfgang is not only a jazz pianist. He knows his way well with electronic gear, studio equipment and contemporary styles. In his recording studio he produces for various artists. In 1995 he writes and produces music for the German television ZDF. As a keyboard player he works in 1996 for the Dutch theater company “Orkater†and in 1998 plays the jazz musical “Larry, this funny worldâ€. Since 1999 he accompanies the Dutch actor and singer Eric Beekes in the music theater programs for children called “Droomwolken†and "liedjes van verlangen". In 2000 he writes and produces the music for the Dutch children theater play “mijn tante en ik op vakantieâ€. In 2003 he forms the lounge-dance duo 2beatz4 together with Jan van Eerd. Since half a year Wolfgang is working together with Carlo Banning on a new project called BeatsClassics.
Wolfgang shared the stage with Dutch and International jazz musicians like Ferdinand Povel, Cameron Brown, Rick Margitza, Joe Lovano, Rob Madna, Jesse van Ruller, Benjamin Herman, Jan Menu, Bart van Lier, Deborah Carter and others. He is teaching jazz piano at DJAM, the School for Jazz and Contemporary Music in Amsterdam since 2002. He is also a steady member of the Dutch dance classics cover band “First Moveâ€.
