Band Members: D. W. Matzdorf
Vocals, Percussion, Keyboards
D. W. Matzdorf spent many formative early years in America listening to Jazz and Soul, and the USA influence shows in his vocal style and in his songs. But he started to sing when he came to live in London in his teens and he hasn't really stopped since. Bands have included 1980s experimental Jazz/Rock octet 'Reckless Pedestrians'. Sessions have included dance music, soul, R&B and film soundtrack work. Musical theatre has included the 'Second Stride' production of 'Hotel' by Orlando Gough & Caryl Churchill. He writes and produces much of the material for ‘Say What?’
Carl Woodbridge
Bass, Backing Vocals
Carl has played bass for 26 Years. Trained to Grade 5 in Classical Guitar. Has played in various groups of all styles of music - Rock, Pop, Funk, Latin, Cabaret. Carl was in the founding trio of the Latin/Jazz band 'Asi y Asa' and has played at venues such as 'The Jazz Café', 'Salsa', 'The Half Moon' (Putney and Herne Hill), 'The Rock Garden' in addition to many other venues around London and the South East.
Mike Rowlands
Saxophone, Backing Vocals
Mike has been playing Saxophone from the age of 15 and is a graduate of Newcastle and Goldsmiths' Colleges where he studied Jazz and Contemporary Music. He is an experienced arranger and improviser across Funk, Soul and Jazz through to Latin. Mike was a founder of the Latin-crossover band 'Asi y Asa', with residencies at many of London's top clubs such as 'The Jazz Café' and 'Salsa'. Mike is now mainly concentrating on his Jazz, playing Alto and Soprano saxophones, but he also plays rhythm guitar.
Keith Ravenhill
Drums, Backing Vocals
Keith is of mixed Latin American/English parentage and spent his formative years, and half of his adult life in Latin America, in one country or another. He has written one of the band’s Latin-influenced songs and contributes heavily to the rhythmic structure overall. Keith has played drums from the age of 14 and as well as being the driving-force behind Latin crossover band 'Asi y Asa' he has played many styles of music. Sessions include Hip Hop, Garage, Jazz and Rock/Pop in its many forms and theatre has included work for BBC in house.
Martin Butler
Guitar
Martin started out playing trumpet at an early age, performing at The RAH with a national youth orchestra, before taking up guitar, which has been his favoured instrument for over 25 years. Martin has played and recorded with numerous bands across the South-East of England, including a spell as sideman for UK soul singer and recording artist Roy Hamilton. He has also written some of the Latin-influenced material for ‘Say What?’.
Ralph Buschow
Keyboards
Another transplanted North-American, Ralph hails from the Canadian Midwest and his early years saw him gigging between there and the West Coast venturing as far south as Los Angeles and north as far as Prince George. His move to London in 1986 necessitated a reduction in keyboards leading him to get involved in the burgeoning MIDI music field where he developed numerous soundtracks and occasional music for films and corporate videos.
