One thing, however, can be said with certainty: Meng not only writes fine songs but also knows how to play the piano and sing. Her first radio single “Strong Enough” is the best proof that a song says more than a thousand words. ///////////////// Born and raised in Tianjin southwest of Bejing, multitalented Meng starts playing the piano at age four. In her teenage years her family emigrates to Switzerland where she starts to sing and play her first concerts in high school bands. Growing up in between two cultures, experiencing otherness and the necessity to think across borders, define Meng’s new life and music. Over the years she writes dozens of songs, mostly in English, some indebut album “New Start” contains a selection of these songs. //////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// ////////////////////////////////// Album "New Start": Meng describes her music as unadorned, and it is precisely this authenticity that makes the honesty and sincerity of her songs steer clear of any pathos or ingratiation. For example, “Homeless I & II” and “Not Fitting In” are unagitated reflections on the topic of cultural displacement with all its sweet and bitter aspects. “Ying Shan Hong” is a cover version from a Chinese film soundtrack, a lullaby that was sung to Meng as a child and, as she notes, still conjures up wonderful memories. ////////////////////Besides such songs bearing strong cultural references, “New Start” also treats everyday issues like heartache, loneliness or hope: “I wish there could be another you to give me a another me”, Meng sings on “Alive Again”. Another expressive facet can be heard on “Strong Enough” – a tune that needn’t dread the comparison with Alanis Morisette or even Björk and The Police. The song is a tongue-in-cheek ode to the emancipation from emotional dependencies: “Lie to me, shout at me, use me, ignore me, laugh at me, leave me, I don't need you here anymore.” ////////////////////////Meng Tian’s debut album is multi-faceted in sound and message, which also has to do with the fine production work of Dan Suter and Thomas Winkler. Recorded at Sound Development Studio in Zurich, the songs seem to float in the air without ever being shallow. The instrumentation is carefully tailored to the songs and always gives Meng’s voice and piano parts enough air to breathe. Ein Song sagt mehr als tausend Worte. /////////////////Aufgewachsen in Tianjin südöstlich von Peking, setzt sich das Multitalent Meng bereits mit vier Jahren erstmals ans Piano, bevor sie als Teenager in die Schweiz kommt, zu singen beginnt und in Schülerbands erste Live-Erfahrungen sammelt. Das Aufwachsen zwischen zwei Kulturen, das Fremdsein und das damit verbundene Denken über Grenzen hinweg, prägen Mengs Alltag und Musik. Über die Jahre entstehen dutzende von Songs, die meist in Englisch, teils auch in Chinesisch verfasst sind. Auf ihrem Debut-Album “New Start” stellt die 21-Jährige nun eine Auswahl dieser Lieder vor. //////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// //////////////////////////////Album “New Start”:Meng beschreibt ihre Musik als schlicht, und genau die Natürlichkeit ihrer Songs ist es denn auch, die ihre Ehrlichkeit nie anbiedernd und ihre Ernsthaftigkeit nie erdrückend wirken lässt. “Homeless I & II” und “Not Fitting In” etwa kreisen unaufgeregt um das Thema der kulturellen Entwurzelung mit all seinen süssen und bitteren Seiten. “Ying Shan Hong” ist ein Cover aus einem chinesischen Filmsoundtrack, ein Gutenachtlied, das Meng als Kind jeweils vorgesungen wurde und das schlicht mit schönen Erinnerungen verbunden sei. ////////////////////Neben Songs mit stark kulturellen Bezügen sind auf “New Start” auch alltägliche Themen wie Herzschmerz, Einsamkeit oder Hoffnung zu finden: „I wish there could be another you to give me a me“ singt Meng auf “Alive Again”. Die im Sound Development Studio Zürich aufgenommen Songs wirken luftig leicht aber nie seicht, die Instrumentierung ist sorgfältig zurückhaltend und lässt Mengs Pianospiel und warmer Stimme genügend Raum zur Entfaltung. Das Wechselspiel zwischen Stimme und Piano steht stets im Mittelpunkt des Geschehens, was dem Album seine besondere Einheit und Dringlichkeit verleiht.
