DOCTOR WHO..... THE WHO SHOP.....
1984 TO 2007 AND STILL GOING STRONG.......
Alexandra's the name and Doctor Who memorabilia and merchandise is my game.
I opened the original Doctor Who Shop in a warehouse in Wapping in 1984.
Among 'The Who Shop groupies' there was a young man called Paul Cornell, Paul wrote the fabulous New series Doctor Who episodes Fathers Day,Human Nature and Family of Blood.
Many who have come to the shop over the years are now writers, behind the scenes and actors on the show.
I opened the shop after my elder brother John went to the Longleat Convention and came back with lots of 'Who' goodies. I asked him why he didn't simply buy them in London. ' Cos there isn't anywhere' ( to be said in a scouse accent, as that's where we are from.
For those that have the convention DVD/FILM, John is the person being talked about by a fan, who is being interviewed on the Myth Maker Longleat D.V.D,
He slept in the toilets overnight in the grounds, as all the local B&B's and hotels were all booked up!
Mmmm I thought, and a plan was hatched.
At the time I was a struggling actress and I needed an extra income. I went to the Beeb (the BBC to you) to see a darling man called Christopher Crouch and The Doctor Who Shop was born.
On the first day of trade, at 11:25am a dashing R.A.F man (complete in flying jacket) came into the shop.
Within days he was painting the doors to look like the Tardis, creating models and being an all round good guy. Two years and many Doctor Who conventions later I married him and we have just celebrated our 20th anniversary.
The first signing was with David Banks, the cyberman of the 80's. We also had a writer called Douglas Adams, who is the well known creator of The Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy come to the shop and that was also the first time the shop appeared on Television (it certainly wasn't the last).
The shop has been featured on many different channels and programmes . We are often asked to contribute to programmes and have received some lovely letters from the producers.

The shop moved to East Ham (opposite the tube station) in 1991 and we were then re-opened by Debbie Watling.
Over the years we have had signings with over a hundred Doctor Who actors.
I have had events with Pat Troughton back in 1986,
The much missed Jon Pertwee ,
Tom Baker, Colin Baker, Sylvester Mc Coy and Paul Mc Gann and private signings with amongst others Trevor Martin the stage Doctor, Stephen Fry and others who due to filming commitments couldn't make it to the shop but happily signed for the shop.
My favourite is Jon Pertwee who I tooked to many events around the country and the U.S.
BUT I must admit the most entertaining, has to be John Barrowman who was terrific.
An absolute delight to the fans who adore him.
My husband laughed at my face turning very red, at the jokes John kept whispering to me at the shop event, We hope to have him back again real soon.......
We've also had lots of none related Dr Who guests who have come and done signing days, many actors from Buffy, Angel,Farscape,Babylon 5 and Star Trek.
