MARCUS WYATT

About Me

Marcus Wyatt hails from Port Elizabeth in the Eastern Cape has been playing the horn since 1983. He is part of a new generation of South African musicians - respectful of the past, yet moving forward without fear of twisting boundaries.
This young trumpet player has performed around the globe, and worked with an impressive array of musicians, from Manu Dibango, Abdullah Ibrahim and Miriam Makeba to Carlo Mombelli,Bheki Mseleku and The Stockholm Jazz Orchestra.Marcus has performed with a number of prominent European musicians including Jason Yarde,Louis Moholo,Sean Bergin,Eric Van der Westen,Eris Calmes ,Dave O’higgins and Courtney Pine(on his set in Johannesburg). He has performed on numerous national and international festivals in South Africa,Holland,Italy,Sweden,Belgium,Germany,Seychelles,Taiwa n and Malaysia.
Marcus is able to entertain a very fruitful conversation between a clearly South African jazz tradition, and a more international resonance, displaying his musical know-how at times in the image of Freddie Hubbard with a nod here and there to the Jazz legend Miles Davis himself. Over the years he has developed a reputation of being one of the most versatile and in demand trumpet players in South Africa. Not only is he one of the hardest working musicians, but is also an obvious and rarely gifted trumpet player. He is equally at home in any number of settings from small ensembles, trios and big bands to drum n bass, hip hop, R&B and house and round the corner to free improvisation. This combined with a warm, wide sound, has earned him the respect of both his fellow musicians and critics alike.
Marcus Wyatt's first two albums “Gathering” and “Africans in Space” have both been critically acclaimed, and feature some of South Africa's finest Jazz musicians. Marcus is also a founding member of the acclaimed South African quintet VOICE, comprising Andile Yenana (piano), Herbie Tsoaeli (acc.bass),Sydney Mnisi(sax)and Morabo Morajele (drums).VOICE have released two albums, “Quintet Legacy vol.1 and vol.2 (Songs For Our Grandchildren)”.
“Gathering”, “Africans In Space”, “Quintet Legacy vol.1” and “Quintet legacy vol.2” have all been nominated for South African Music Awards (SAMA).
“Language 12”is the eagerly awaited new album from Marcus Wyatt, and is destined to be another classic. The music breaks away from the straight-ahead jazz sound to a more groove based concept, with loops and sound scapes interspersed with great live performances. Compositionally, this album is very different to Marcus’ last offering “Africans in Space”, and represents a more experimental approach. “Language 12” is highly evocative, warm and emotional, and seems to strike a perfect balance between originality and accessibility. “My life as a travelling musician has come out in this album. It’s one of the reasons I called it Language 12. Stylistically, it moves around a lot from Bebop to Hip Hop, Funk to Drum n Bass, but with a common sound and concept…”As a bandleader, Wyatt never dominates, and here you will hear some of South Africa’s most exciting talent shine.
"Here we are. The luckiest people in the world. We live in the most beautiful country on the tip of the oldest richest continent - right in the cradle of humankind. Space, in every form, abounds here. This music is an expression of that, and is and always will be, inspired by it."
