Artistry
This proverbial "girl and a piano" follows in the heady footsteps of fellow redhead Tori Amos's early work, fusing electronica, jazz, and other contemporary influences with her own strengths as a singer/songwriter to transform life experiences and emotions into songs that express the fear and joy and pain and love that connect us all. Axel studied at Boston's renowned Berklee College of Music and went on to earn her master's in Interdisciplinary Arts on full scholarship to Nova Southeastern University, where she hosted the eclectic music show The Authentic Life on Radio X 88.5 FM. As Creative Director of the stage production The Human Adventure: resurrecting the memory of love , Axel incorporated much of her original music alongside popular electronic, rock, and film score pieces for a multimedia-, drama-, and dance-infused presentation of the "hero's journey" toward fulfillment and authenticity. She is currently in the studio recording her first full length album, set to follow her sold out debut EP Free Time (still available for download via iTunes) with a 2008 release.
Consulting
With a degree in Management from the University of Florida, Axel has spent as much time in the "real world" as she has chasing her musical dreams. This business background has served her well: she serves as a music business consultant to fellow artists and co-produces events such as the Sister Hazel Angels of Mercy Benefit Concert, which united performers and local businesses in supporting the namesake charity of the well known folk-rock band Sister Hazel. At Berklee, Axel completed her diploma in Music Business (in addition to studies in songwriting, performance, and music technology) and served as Co-Director of Heavy Rotation Records through the release of 2002's Shekinah 13 Artists compilation – the first album produced by a student-run label to be distributed by a major record company (Epic/SONY). While at NSU, Axel received SWEA's 2005 Cultural Scholarship for her work promoting arts education with Lovewell Institute for the Creative Arts in Sweden and completed a graduate internship as the Production Assistant for Nefertiti – A Musical Romance at the historic Parker Playhouse. In 2006, Axel relocated to Denver, where she served as editor of Colorado Music Buzz Magazine through December 2007, helping to develop the publication in its formative years. She continues to assist fellow artists and organizations as an independent editor, writer, and business consultant specializing in strategic planning/presentation/development in arts and education.

My Interests

Music:

Band Website: melissaaxel.com
Band Members: Melissa Axel - vocals, piano
Influences: I don't know if they are influences since I found many of them after I started making music myself, but some colleagues that I love include: Regina Spektor , Jon Brion , Colin Hay , Sia , Zero 7 , Imogen Heap / Frou Frou , BT , Peter Gabriel , Sting , India.Arie , Björk , Poe , Clannad , Ella Fitzgerald , and The Swell Season (Glen Hansard & Markéta Irglová) .
Sounds Like: My music has been compared to that of Tori Amos with more straightforward lyrics... some say the vocals are also sometimes a bit like Norah Jones and some have also said my writing reminds them of Ani DiFranco . Basically the (sometimes smart, often emotional, but rarely psychotic) girl with a piano, mixing in electronic, jazz, world and other contemporary influences here and there.
