Horse lovers and the ones who share the same willingness to protect horses against slaughter. Here is an association: Equine protection Network: their website is http://www.equineprotectionnetwork.com/saveamericashorses/in dex.htmlAnother society that protects horses are the Society for Animal Protective Legislation. their website is http://www.saplonline.org/horses.htmHORSE ABATTOIRSIt is legal to slaughter horses in South Africa Although horses may be slaughtered under certain circumstances we have found some horrific conditions. Slaughterhouses do require a licence and there are licensed abattoirs in Gauteng, Free State, Northern Natal and one in the Western Cape. The main market for legally slaughtered horsemeat (mainly the hindquarter) is for export to Europe for human consumption. However control and supervision is grossly inadequate. It is our belief that a number of legal slaughter facilities are not inspected and monitored on a regular basis because of a lack of resources in animal welfare.Shortage of welfare inspectors to investigate complaints. We at the Highveld Horse Care Unit have only two inspectors out in the field and they cover all equine complaints, including neglect, cruelty and slaughter, from Messina to Bloemfontein and Kimberley. The slaughter of horses remains a huge problem and although we do investigate we find it difficult to convict the people involved because we have neither the finance nor the staff. Added to this, some of the individuals who have been successfully prosecuted quickly go underground once the scandal is over only to begin slaughtering again. The illegal use of horsemeat for human consumption is suspected It is illegal to sell horsemeat under false pretences. But we suspect that meat from slaughtered horses is being used illegally for human consumption in South Africa. In fact we have come across horsemeat being sold as game biltong and being put into processed meats and pies. However it is very difficult to prove this to a court without forensic testing which is both difficult and cost prohibitive. It also appears that there may be a huge cover up due to the substantial financial profits being made. The transportation of these horses also leaves much to be desired. There are general laws such as the Animal Protection Act 71 of 1962 relating to transportation, but again due to the lack of resources we are unable to monitor transportation as carefully as we would wish to. This is extremely frustrating and unsatisfactory.A number of years ago we were able to stop transportation of hoses by rail as they were subjected to the most appalling conditions.
This first film is called 'Meet your meat': watch it and you'll change your mind about eating meat.............This second film about horse slaughter, in pictures. I haven't watched it until the end because i cannot bear. I DON'T understand how a human being can be so cruel. People need to be aware of how animals are treated. This third has been shot by Stella Mc Cartney. It takes place in a fur farm in the US........The fourth film is showing the way asians kill dogs and cats for fur. These people have no heart and should be treated the same way as the animals are being treated.....
