I am here for Networking

About Me

I currently work for Vanderbilt University Medical Center here in Nashville in the Medical Informatics Department. I've been a software developer/architect for approximately 15 years and also have an Automotive background ( Link ). I've written many audio scripts for a company called AudioWhiz.com since 1999. AudioWhiz is an audio based IT Certificaton prep tool and is the brainchild of Gary Knuckles.
Gary also owns BudgetWare Inc. in which I wrote a web affiliate application called Internet Information Manager . Gary wrote the business specs and I developed the application in VB 6 in 2002. The affiliate application helps you manage your internet information, personal information, affiliate products, ebooks, passwords, and marketing data from one interface.
I've enjoyed being a part-time Technology teacher at several Technical Colleges and Universities the past 10 years or so as a second job. I remember something that someone said to me years ago about the teaching and learning process that has been with me since. "The key to successful teaching is to put yourself in the place of the student. If you wouldn't like performing a particular activity, why do you think the students will?" The highest percentage of a student's learning process should be the discovery process. You can tell a student that pi is the ratio of a circle's diameter to its circumference, but if they experience it through actual activities, then they own it and will never forget it.
My advice to any student that I’ve ever taught is to be careful of what you perceive things to be, including government, politics, technical operation, and even religion. Always be skeptical and dig for the truth. Your reality or understanding of anything is simply your perception of it.
Although its been a long time since I've lived there, I am in love with the mountains of East Tennessee. It is my home originally and where my heart lives. My family has lived in the East Tennessee area since 1736. I love the people, the culture and the wonderful music born out of those hills (that high lonesome sound).
Since growing up in the coal camps of North East Tennessee (Claiborne and Campbell County), I've lived many places including Windfield WV, Pt Plesant WV, Tampa, Vero Beach, St Paul, Omaha, Sioux City, Cincinnati, Louisville, and even Portauprince for a little while. I am happy to be back in Tennessee where East Tennessee is only a short drive, and heaven is a local call. Although I enjoy most types of music, I do feel however that a sad change is taking place in country music. I agree with the words of that song of Larry Cordle's "Murder on Music Row". The soul of country music is starting to fade. I am just thankful that bluegrass is becoming very popular and filling the gap.
I recently traced my family’s genealogy back to 1540 in Germany. My grandfather’s name was Rev. Speed Powers of Pruden TN. link to my genealogy

My Interests

Enterprize Architecture, Web Development, Electronics, and bluegrass music. Although developing software is my job, it is also what I enjoy doing. I enjoy developing Enterprize applicaions, stand alone windows apps, web apps and PIC based programming. I also enjoy playing the guitar, writing songs and poetry.

I'd like to meet:

Dan Tyminski, Alison Krause, Shady Sparks, Russell Moore, and Steve Gulley.

If I were a bluegrass singer and wanted to be successful, I wouldn't pray for any specifics, I would just pray for a singing voice just like that of Russell Moore of IIIrd Tyme Out. His voice is beyond any description I could possibly put into words. I could listen to him sing 24x7.

Steve Gulley has an original (real) country sound that is very unique. His sound was a large portion of the Mountain Heart sound before he left the group. He has a one of a kind wonderful voice full of real country/bluegrass soul.

Music:

IIIrd Tyme out, Steve Gulley, GrassTown, Mountain Heart, Larry Sparks, The Cumberland Gap Connection, George Jones, Vern Gosden, Nora Jones

Movies:

Cold Mountain, Sling Blade, Little Big Man, Pursuit of happiness

Television:

History channel, Discovery cannel, House is probably my favorite show, Two and a half men

Books:

Mostly technical books detailing Cisco, HP OpenView, HP NNM and Microsoft Solutions.
The amount of technical info required to remain technically competitive in any technical field today is overwhelming. This video is a good realization of what is happening in the information age with technology.

Heroes:

"Few people are capable of expressing with equanimity opinions which differ from the prejudices of their social environment. Most people are even incapable of forming such opinions." -- Albert Einstein
