Listen to Adelaides
Sumi punch out their special brand of rock, and once you get your breath back youll soon realise that this is a band not easily categorised. The diverse and energetic sound that is
Sumi, is a direct result of a combination of passionate, individual musicians blending their varied influences perfectly to achieve a common goal to make great music. For the uninitiated ears, think Hot Water Music meets Jimmy Eat World, meets Jebediah and youll aurally get an idea of what to expect from
Sumi.
Heavily influenced by a multitude of alternative tastes three mates Daniel Gaskin (guitar, vox), Jason Coe (drums) and Alan Grillo (guitar) formed
Sumi and have since developed a reputable status in the music industry hitting the stage at every possible opportunity, supporting those musicians around them and pushing themselves harder and harder. The year 2006 welcomed
Sumi's newest member Matt Minarelli (bass) who became part of the line-up full time.
Following a demo release in '03 things were looking sharper for the group when they released their first EP 'Next Years Passing Trend' in 2005, a blistering 5 tracker mixed by Evan James (Lazaros Dog) at Broadcast/Mixmasters studios and produced by Dan Jones. The recording was then re-issued under the DSTAR Records banner (Burn The City, Tiltmeter) and distributed Australia wide. The opening track 'Get Whatcha Give' was hand-picked for promotional releases including 'The Night Live: Session 1' in conjunction with Adelaide's Channel 31 local music show and also 'The New Breed' compilation on SonyBMG/ModernMusic featuring Australian melodic rock bands.
Sumi has taken their live sound to Adelaide's biggest stages including the Taste Of Chaos festival at the Entertainment Centre, Schoolies Festival 2005 in Victor Harbor and more recently featuring in the 2006 Adelaide Big Day Out lineup at Wayville Showgrounds. The band has been lucky to share the stage over the years with some of the biggest Australian music icons including 28 Days, Bodyjar, Thirsty Merc, After The Fall, Antiskeptic, The Hot Lies, In The Grey and Betchadupa, just to name a few.
The excitement surrounding this four-piece only escalates as the musicianship and songwriting matures whilst remaining faithful to their aspirations, experimenting with new ideas and most importantly: keeping it original.
What's new for
Sumi? The lads have just finished recording their next 5-track project at Melbourne's Sound Machine Studios which will be given a 'progressive release' through 2007 here on Myspace! You won't get it anywhere else!
