About Me

*** I'm going to be in New York from the 19th August to 2nd September! Let me know if you're going to be around! ***

Hi, thanks for dropping by. I'm a jazz and classical musician based in London, playing the piano a lot, writing, conducting, and various other bits and pieces besides. There's a bit more about me on my website (samhogarth.net) but this page is where I keep details of any forthcoming events open to the public.

My jazz interests range from really early players like Jelly Roll Morton and James P. Johnson right through to contemporary artists like Chick Corea, Jason Moran and all the wildly exciting and talented people around London - have a look on my friends list. I really love playing standards and enjoy playing with people who know a lot of nice tunes and like playing them; I also love playing interesting original material. I've recently finished recording a duo album with the obscenely talented singer Aisling Lavelle, which combines our takes on standards (mostly slightly obscure ones) with some of our originals. We're hoping to get it out later this year. I'm also hoping to make a recording later this year sponsored by Clement Pianos as a resulting of reaching the final of the Nottingham National Jazz Piano Competition .

On the classical side, I compose, conduct and play, particularly doing a lot of chamber music and accompanying recently. My opera, 'David and Goliath', commissioned by New Chamber Opera , was produced, fully staged, in Queens' College Chapel this March - see website . I've also written a lot of shorter pieces, most recently a wedding march for organ. As a conductor I've worked a lot on C20 and contemporary repertoire, including a staged production of Britten's opera 'The Turn of the Screw', but also a lot of earlier stuff and a couple of big choral works, Brahms' 'German Requiem' and Tippett's 'A Child of Our Time'. I conducted the recent performances of my opera and have more coming up - see my events page.

I also recorded some original music last year for A Mighty Heart , which stars Angelina Jolie and is about the murdered journalist Daniel Pearl. I may be doing some more TV and film work soon - when I do I'll update this!

About the four tracks on the site - the two jazz ones are from my solo album, recorded three years ago. 'Wild Bird', which is a setting of a Tennyson lyric from 'In Memoriam A.H.H.' I wrote in 2003 and is performed here by William Carslake. 'Full Fathom Five' is Ariel's song from Shakespeare's 'The Tempest' and is performed by Matthew Venner.
