About Me

I write an online figure skating soap opera called The Strong and the Sequined.

I started it in 1997, just for fun. I was inspired by the soaps I watched when I was a kid, as well as Armistead Maupin's "Tales Of The City." At the time, I had no idea what I was getting myself into. I do plan to finish it someday. Incidentally, none of my characters is based on any real-life skaters. None of the characters is based on myself, either.

I have also written "real" novels, but they haven't been published yet. Only one of these books, "Red Flags", is about figure skating. It is set in the same fictional skating world as "The Strong and the Sequined" and includes many of the same characters. But "Red Flags" takes place in an earlier time period and the writing style is more literary and less soap opera-ish. Another difference is that I was able to carefully edit "Red Flags", whereas I give each chapter of "The Strong and the Sequined" just a quick once-over before I post it online.

I'm working on a Detroit novel now, although I am just at the beginning stage where I play around with different characters and ideas. I probably have more than one Detroit novel in me. There's also a rock and roll novel somewhere in my brain.

Here are some photos I took when I visited St. Petersburg, Russia during the summer of 2006:

My Interests

Writing and literature, art, music, figure skating, Russian history and culture, basketball (especially the Pistons and the Shock), the Detroit Red Wings, the Detroit Tigers, collecting vintage Fisher-Price Little People toys, collecting vintage schoolbooks, educational and social issues, riding my bicycle, exploring The Fabulous Ruins of Detroit , wearing silly hats, doing fun kid stuff with my nieces, hanging out with friends.

I'd like to meet:

Charlie Brown, Linus, Lucy, Peppermint Patty, Marcy, Sally, Schroeder, Franklin, Pigpen, the Little Red Haired Girl, Woodstock, and-- of course-- Snoopy. :)

Music:

I mostly listen to alternative rock, but my music collection includes a little bit of everything.

This is only scratching the surface. There are a lot of songs by newer artists that I like, but I haven't gotten around to listening to those artists' whole CDs yet. I only know one or two songs. Also, I'm sure I forgot a lot of good music when I made the above list. Either way, I will keep adding new names to the list.

Since I joined MySpace, I've been having fun listening to the up-and-coming artists and bands who have sent me friend requests. I wish you all the best!

Movies:

I like funny movies, including old silent comedies. I am a big fan of Our Gang/The Little Rascals.

Television:

Boston Legal, Desperate Housewives, Saturday Night Live, South Park, Little Mosque On the Prairie, and Degrassi: The Next Generation are among my current favorites. I also like to watch reruns or DVDs of the original Degrassi series, Keeping Up Appearances, Little House on the Prairie, Roseanne, the Brady Bunch, M*A*SH* and Northern Exposure. I am a lifelong fan of Sesame Street, Mister Rogers' Neighborhood, the Hot Fudge Show, the Friendly Giant, and Mr. Dressup. Lately, I have been watching a lot of Animal Planet, especially Orangutan Island.

Books:

I like John Irving, Armistead Maupin, Alice Walker, Dorothy Allison, Torey Hayden, Jonathan Kozol, Barbara Kingsolver, Sue Townsend's Adrian Mole diaries... For more on books, see my blog.

Heroes:

People who try to make life better for the "have nots" of this world, wherever they may be. I especially admire people who are idealistic, yet also have common sense. If you want to save the world, that's wonderful. But if you have a plan that will actually work in real life with real human beings, that's even better.
