MUSIC OF MOST KINDS - but especially Classical, Folk and 'World' music - has always meant a lot to me in my life. I also like some Jazz, Rock, Soul, and experimental music. I've always admired people who have been for originality and struggled against the mainstream. DO like: fusions between different genres and styles - when they work!. DON'T like: mainstream commercial Pop music. DON'T like: loud Pop and Rock music for the sake of making noise. DON'T like: background 'muzak' wherever I go. DO like: music which I feel has a strong artistic integrity and which is true to it's roots and inspiration - whatever they are and wherever they've come from
DON'T like: at least 90% of Hollywood films. DON'T like: films with gratuitous violence, vulgarity, trashiness and sensationalism for the sake of entertainment. DO like: great European cinema (Fellini, Renoir, Bergman), British directors like Ken Loach and David Lean and good American directors like Robert Altman and Stanley Kubrick. DO like: films from anywhere in the world with either intellectual or artistic value (or preferably both), so that I feel I've watched something worthwhile and gained from it in some way. Greatest science fiction film of all time?: '2001 - A Space Odyssey'
DON'T like: at least 90% of what's on British TV today. HATE: stupid and superficial celebrity culture and mindless so-called 'reality TV' shows like 'Big Brother'!. DO like: good films (see above) and drama, documentaries, news and current affairs progs., nature progs. (such as 'Planet Earth'), and good music shows such as 'Later with Jools Holland'. Favourite channel: BBC4
Most of my reading has always been factual based on my interests, but I appreciate modern European fiction including classics such as James Joyce's 'Ulysses' and Jean-Paul Sartre's 'Roads to Freedom'. On a lighter note, I like 'The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy'. I also like poetry and prose
So difficult to say!. What makes a 'hero'? - there must be millions of unsung ordinary human beings around the world heroically struggling to survive every day. However, on one level I'd list some of the truly great people of history such as: The Buddha, Plato, Da Vinci, Galileo, Darwin, Marx, Einstein, Gandhi, Martin Luther King and Nelson Mandela . . . on another, I'd include the late Carl Sagan - great American scientist, astronomer, internationalist, universal man and 'Man of the Universe', as one of my inspirers
