Weirdo Theatre in Erie Pa FRIDAY THE 13TH ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^WE PRIDE OURSELVES IN BEING ABLE TO ADJUST TO ANY ENVIRONMENT, FROM SLOW AND ETHEREAL TO THE INTENSITIES OF A CIRCUS FROM MARS.

JOSEPH ALLEN POPP'S WEIRDO THEATRE ORKEZTRA:
joseph allen popp's WEIRDO THEATRE ORKEZTRA IS:................. JOSEPH ALLEN POPP guitars, home-made poppsickle sticks, effects.........................ROB GRAY voice, theremin, persona extaordinaire ....................KENNETH FELIX CORNELIUS bass guitars................................RICK LOPEZ bombastic percussion specialist.....JAMES PEARSON cello manipulations.................LOUIS NICOLIA violin strangler
Influences: "Weirdo Theatre is a quintessential post-modern troupe, the bastard child of Tom Swift and Léon Theremin: lithe bodies writhing dancelike to faintly nostalgic art noise improvised by a retro-futurist ensemble. Under a stage set born in hyperspace, Joe Popp's remarkably inventive guitar-- squeezed through a jury-rigged rack of sound contraptions-- dominates, occasionally challenged by the shouts and squeals of the thereminist, all laid down over a rock-hard rhythm section. It's the anti-Broadway show. --John Vanco ( Director, Erie Art Museum) ************************************************************ *** It’s a calliope-fed LSD trip jolted to Frankenstein life. It’s a circus from Mars. A perfect madness. A multihued cyclone coming to take you away. But nowhere is there a moment’s antagonism. For all its giddy, berserk peculiarity, this is a surreal kaleidoscope of good will. The show comes on “fast and slow and every other motion” and lifts you to a strange, safe, disorienting place. Rick Lopez’s churning insistent drumming creates, in my visual cortex, a kind of scaffolding, like a cloud of spikes and spears thrown into the air, held by a vast magnetic field, holding together and guiding it all. Joe Popp’s steel wool guitar torrents can give way to any of his homemade musical objects fed through a homemade motherboard of distortion devices. Rob’s consciousness is streaming throughout, creating complex waterfalls of languages and a series of odd mouth-noises. Ken thunders and thuds his earthquake bass line, and the room shudders. I get lost for a while in the deep hues of crimson, purples, deep blues, and the spooky human presences of Dodson’s murals. --John Edwards, from the two-page "Featured Artist" spread in the April-May issue of ARTEFAKT Magazine ************************************************************ *** Best Out-There Music Act Joseph Allen Popp's Weirdo Theatre If Top 40 pop resembled Popp's Weirdo Theater, what a bent, unfettered, fun-house mirror kind-of world it'd be. With this experimental band, you fasten your seat belt and blast off to uncharted musical galaxies. You've no clue where you're going, but the fun is in the getting there. Drummer Rick Lopez, who never met a time signature he didn't like, and supremely funky bassist Kenny Cornelius keep the ship steady. Meanwhile, vocalist and theremin player Rob Gray and guitarist Joe Popp-- clearly a fan of Fripp and Eno, as well as Zappa and Roxy's Phil Manzanera-- pilot the crew into a nebula of free-form jazz, metal shrieks, acid-house soundscapes, and art-rock detours. --Dave Richards, from the 3rd Annual "BEST OF ERIE" Arts & Entertainment Special to the Erie-Times News, May 26, 2005
