Stunning album by Dutch modern classical/avantgarde composer Troy Spencer who works and resides in Berlin, but records in his home studio in Dalen, the Netherlands. By combining elements from a wide variety of genres and many original ideas Spencer developed a unique style with a contemporary feel, a somewhat cinematic approach, bits of storytelling and a progressive attitude. A disc chock full of surprising capers!
(Clear spot)
Troy Spencer’s Phase 2 is as astounding as it is an intriguing piece of work. The music on this album is impossible to categorize, Modern classical music and Avant-garde jazz get alternated with spoken word, pop and rock. The brilliant madness Of Frank Zappa is never far away, amazing and sometimes utterly absurd!
(Dagblad van het Noorden)
Interesting and unusual CD by Dutch multi-instrumentalist of through-composed, well arranged, shapely pieces, nicely realised. The Zappa influence is palpable: Unfashionably musical!
(Recommended records)
Spencer's approach to music is virtually unheard of in this day and age.
You might have expected this 40 years ago with Frank Zappa or the Soft machine,
but nowadays this approach to music is becoming a rare commodity.
Spencer's compositions flow in between jazz, modern classical music,
avantgarde and progrock.
Phase 2 is a beautiful album, warm and with a rare depth to it!

Your average, everyday music listener could just as well stop reading now.
The music Troy Spencer composes is not particularly meant for mass consumption.
This disc contains a bizarre mixture of modern classical music, symphonic rock and fusion.
You are warned! this music is strictly for the musically well educated explorers!
(OOR)
The Dutch composer and multi-instrumentalist Troy Spencer must have had tons of fun while recording Phase 2. He single-handedly composed all the music, played all the instruments and wrote the lyrics for this album.
This resulted in a 13 track enormously diverse rollercoaster of an album which reminds one, at times, of The Residents in their prime. Phase 2 is carefully constructed anarchy with tongue planted firmly in cheek, it's been a long while since I've heard such an uplifting and challenging album.
