The majority of the gypsy musical groups in Germany remain true to the style of Django Reinhardt.The first European who made an independent contribution to jazz.His guitar style was unique and wasn't rooted in American or African culture.The swingof the brilliant guitarist lives on in small and large musical groups.Virtuoso fingers fly with amazing frugality or devilish speed.
Lulo Reinhardt,his father Bawo and cousin Bavo, all desendants of the legendary musician,preserve Reinhardt's musical tradition. There is no-one in the family who at least does not play the guitar and as a trio they play dance music with fire and originality.
Lulo's grandfather,who was a famous recording violinist before the Second World War,started a travelling circus in which the whole family including children,cousins and grandchildren,performed as artists.The trio had recorded three successful LP's by 1982.
The painful experiences of childhood and worries about the future survival of his people led Bawo together with Lulo and Bavo to add new forms expression to SINTI music and in 1993 founded I GITANOS.
Bass and drums made the music more accessible and singing in their native language of ROMANESE left no doubt about the roots of their music.It was intended to be a medium through which they could convey to everyone THE POWER OF SURVIVAL and joy for living of the SINTI today.
I Gitanos was born and with their music and their hearts they quickly approached another musical tradition Latin Gypsy when world class percussionist Nicky Marrero joined the group.They recorded "I SUNI" in 1994.
The audience recieved I GITANOS enthusiastically when they performed at all kinds of large festivals,stadiums,clubs and theaters capturing everyones heart."payo como sinto".
Aware that they have a big name.I GITANOS are proving once again that this name stands for MUSICAL RENEWAL.
