Words, music, cultural anomolies, books, theater, history, laughter and its causes.
I'm a sucker for intelligent, witty people of integrity who also have tender hearts; rare enough attributes in themselves but highly unusual when found in combination. Being married to an artist, I gravitate towards other artists, actors, writers, performers, etc. People who are committed, or should be. Oh, yeah---it helps if they're nuts, too.
Mostly folky, jazzy, singer/songwriter type stuff, though virtuosity in any genre really blows my skirts up. From Everything But The Girl to Dave's True Story, Susan Werner to Vance Gilbert, the Gershwins and Lorenz Hart to Stephen Sondheim, Hal Ketchum to James Taylor, Stephane Grappelli to Bela Fleck, Stephen Bishop to Dar Williams, 1930's/American Songbook stuff, Kenny Rankin to Diana Krall...oh, Lordy, can't name 'em all...
The Lion In Winter, Midnight In The Garden Of Good And Evil, Hellzapoppin', Crazy House, Ghostcatchers, Crossing Delancy, Murphy's Romance, Broadcast News, The Thin Man, Desk Set, Bell, Book and Candle, Much Ado About Nothing, Sixteen Candles, WarGames, Lawrence of Arabia, My Favorite Year...
Sex and the City, Monk, HGTV, Antiques Roadshow, Mythbusters, What Not To Wear, and the major awards shows---because somebody has to watch them---and Letterman, Craig Ferguson, ST:TNG reruns, poker shows (!!!)
My head is spinning, but: Harper Lee's To Kill A Mockingbird, Half Magic by Edward Eager, I See By My Outfit by Peter S. Beagle, Mary Stewart's "Merlin" series, Black Elk Speaks by John Neihardt, The Chronicles of Amber by Roger Zelazny, all of Sparkle Hayter's novels, ditto Lauren Henderson ("Tart Noir" authors), Waiting For the Galactic Bus and The Snake Oil Wars by Parke Godwin, The Ozark Trilogy by Suzette Haden Elgin, short story masters Saki (H.H. Munro), S.J. Perelman, James Thurber...aiee!!! The Jungle Books by Rudyard Kipling, And the biographies, my god...
Those who, in W.H. Auden's phrase, "stagger on rejoicing."
